Tuition-free degrees, the 18-month job-search visa, the engineering capital of Europe
Public universities charge little to no tuition — even for non-EU students. Add the €11,904 Sperrkonto (released to you €992/month after arrival), 18 months to find work after graduation, and a job market starved for engineers, and Germany is the strongest value play in Western Europe.

Why Choose Germany?
Tuition-Free Public Universities
Most German states charge no tuition for non-EU students — only a €150–€350 semester contribution that includes regional transport. Engineering and CS at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT and Heidelberg cost €0/year in tuition.
2,000+ English-Taught Programs
You don't need German to start a Master's — over 2,000 English-medium programs run at public universities, especially in engineering, computer science, and management.
18-Month Job-Search Visa
Graduate, then stay 18 months on a job-search residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitsplatzsuche). Sri Lankan STEM graduates routinely place at BMW, Siemens, SAP and Mercedes-Benz before the period ends.
What it costs to study in Germany
Germany is the rare country where Year 1 can cost less than Year 1 in Sri Lanka if you stay in a public university and a smaller city. Here is a realistic LKR estimate for a Sri Lankan student starting in 2026.
check_circle Lanka Scholar's counselling, applications and visa prep are free. Universities pay us a commission when you enrol — you pay tuition and visa fees to the institutions themselves.
Note on Exchange Rates
Figures use an indicative rate of EUR 1 ≈ LKR 340. The Sperrkonto requirement is set by BAföG (€992/month × 12 = €11,904). Verify the live rate and the current BAföG figure before your visa appointment.
Average Annual Costs
The Sperrkonto deposit is your living-cost fund, not a fee — it is released at €992/month after arrival.

-
Is studying really free at German public universities? expand_more
Almost — every German state has dropped tuition for non-EU students except Baden-Württemberg (€3,000/year) and Bavaria (€2,000–€3,000/year, reintroduced 2024). You still pay a €150–€350 per-semester contribution that includes regional transport. -
What is the Sperrkonto and is the money refundable? expand_more
A Sperrkonto is a blocked German bank account. You deposit €11,904 before the visa, the bank issues confirmation to the embassy, then after arrival the bank releases €992/month for 12 months. It's your living-cost fund — not a fee. -
Do I need to know German? expand_more
Not for English-taught Master's — over 2,000 run entirely in English. For German-taught programs, B2-level proficiency is required. For daily life and post-study work, A2-level German is realistic to pick up in your first semester. -
What is APS and why does it matter for Sri Lankans? expand_more
APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is academic verification Sri Lankan applicants need before applying to any German university or visa. We submit your transcripts to the APS office in Delhi, which issues a certificate within 8–12 weeks. Plan ahead. -
Can I stay in Germany after graduating? expand_more
Yes — you get an 18-month residence permit to find a graduate-level job. Once employed in your field you switch to a work residence permit and can apply for permanent residency after 21–33 months depending on language proficiency. -
Is Germany really free for Sri Lankan students? expand_more
Yes, for most public universities. TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, KIT, Heidelberg — all charge only the semester contribution (€150–€350, which includes regional transport). The main upfront cost is the Sperrkonto (€11,904 blocked account, refunded monthly after arrival). English-taught Master's are the main entry point — Bachelor's programs mostly require B2 German. -
How does the APS certificate affect Sri Lankan applicants to Germany? expand_more
APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is a mandatory academic verification for Sri Lankan applicants — you submit your A/L and degree transcripts to the APS office in New Delhi, and the certificate is issued within 8–12 weeks. No German university will process your application without it. We manage the APS submission and coordinate the timing with your application deadlines.
