What it costs to study in the USA
The USA has the widest cost range of any destination — Ivy League undergraduates may pay nothing with full aid, while a private MBA can exceed USD 100k/year. Here is a realistic mid-range estimate.

Average Annual Costs
Before scholarships. Funded undergraduate or PhD admits commonly pay 0–50% of the headline figure.

The main academic year start. Most scholarships, assistantships and merit-aid decisions are made for Fall admits.

A strong secondary intake at many universities — useful if you need extra time for SAT/GRE/IELTS.
Summer Intake
Smaller — limited programs at select universities, mostly for graduate research and short courses.
Common questions about studying in the USA
Don't see your question? WhatsApp a USA counsellor — we usually reply within the hour, weekdays.
-
Will my F-1 visa get refused? expand_more
Refusal rates are lower than the rumour mill suggests for Sri Lankan students with strong financial documentation and clear academic intent. We prep you for the Colombo embassy interview question by question. -
How much scholarship can I realistically get? expand_more
Top US schools fund Sri Lankan undergraduates and PhD students at 80–100% routinely. Master’s funding is rarer — research assistantships covering 30–60% are common in CS, Engineering and the sciences. -
Do I need SAT/GRE? expand_more
Many universities have been test-optional since 2020 — we identify which schools waive standardised tests. STEM Master’s and PhD programs still typically expect GRE, though more are dropping the requirement each year. -
Can I work during studies? expand_more
On-campus only (20 hours/week) for the first academic year. From year two, CPT (Curricular Practical Training) lets you intern off-campus in your field, often paid. -
What's the difference between OPT and STEM OPT? expand_more
Regular OPT = 12 months of post-graduation work. STEM OPT = up to 36 months total for STEM-designated degrees (most CS, engineering, and quantitative sciences). Long enough to be sponsored for an H-1B work visa.
