The need-blind ladder · Verified 2026-05-14
Sri Lankan admits to Harvard, MIT and Amherst routinely pay USD 0–5,000/year.
The trick isn't finding cheap US schools — it's finding schools that fund your profile. The USA has the widest cost range of any destination: USD 30k at a public university, USD 0 at a need-blind Ivy with full aid. Knowing which group you're aiming for is half the application.

Where your money actually goes
Forget the headline number for a moment. Studying in the USA has four cost buckets — and three of them are negotiable.
University
Tuition
Negotiable via scholarship choice, university choice and level of study. The biggest single number on the page.
Your control
Living costs
Rent, food, transport. Choosing a smaller city can save the equivalent of a year's tuition over a 3-year degree.
Fixed
One-time pre-departure
Visa, tests, flights, initial deposits. Same for everyone — plan with buffer; don't be surprised.
Government / required
Health & admin
Health insurance, residency cards, mandatory deposits. Not negotiable — but the cheapest provider can save a lot.
What you pay the university
Ranges below cover every USA institution Lanka Scholar partners with. The lower end is regional / public universities; the upper end is elite institutions. Your tuition is set by where you apply — and how aggressively you target scholarships.
| Study Level | LKR (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's at public uni (per year) | LKR 8M – 13M |
| Bachelor's at private uni (per year) | LKR 14.5M – 21M |
| Master's (per year) | LKR 9.5M – 22.5M |
| Ivy League / Stanford | LKR 19M – 24M |
| PhD (fully funded — typical) | Net positive |
Your single biggest variable
City choice is the lever Sri Lankan families most often underuse. Over a 3-year degree, choosing a smaller city instead of the capital can save the equivalent of a full year's tuition — for the same USA qualification.

One-Time Pre-Departure Costs
Four ways to bring the number down
The headline figure is the starting line, not the finish line. Every Sri Lankan student who lands in the USA has pulled at least two of these levers.
Target need-blind schools for undergrad
Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Amherst and a handful of others are need-blind for international students — they don't consider ability to pay during admissions and meet 100% of demonstrated need. Sri Lankan admits routinely pay USD 0–5,000/year.
savings Saves up to LKR 20M / yearPhD funding is structural — use it
Apply only to programs that fund all admitted PhD students. In STEM, this is the norm — tuition waiver + USD 25,000–40,000 stipend. In humanities, ask specifically for guaranteed funding letters before accepting any offer.
savings Net positive over 5 yearsAvoid the F-2 trap for spouses
F-2 dependents cannot work. If both partners want careers, look at dual F-1 admits, or one partner on H-1B / L-1 directly. Plan this before applying — it's hard to fix after admit.
savings Preserves a second incomeSTEM OPT extends the runway
STEM degrees qualify for 36 months of OPT instead of 12. Almost all engineering, CS and data science programs are STEM-designated. Confirm the CIP code before enrolling.

How we keep these numbers honest
Four things you should know before you trust this page.
Exchange rate stated
All LKR figures use the rate noted in the hero. Live rates fluctuate; we update this page quarterly. Last verified: 2026-05-14.
Universities pay us — never you
Lanka Scholar earns a commission from universities when you enrol. You pay tuition and fees directly to the institutions. There is no service fee, registration fee, or agent fee from us.
Ranges, not promises
Tuition and living costs vary by university and city. We've given the realistic middle 80% — not the cheapest possible or most expensive.

How scholarships change this math
US universities collectively offer more international student aid than any other destination. Sri Lankan students routinely receive 50–100% aid at need-blind schools (Harvard, Yale, MIT, Amherst). At the graduate level, fully-funded PhD positions in STEM are the norm — most include tuition waiver + USD 25,000–40,000 annual stipend. Always research aid policy before applying.

-
How do I know if a school is need-blind for international students? expand_more
Most US schools are need-aware for non-citizens. Only a small group (~10 schools — Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Notre Dame at the time of writing) is fully need-blind. We maintain an updated list and recommend the schools that match your aid profile. -
Do I still need SAT scores? expand_more
Many US schools are test-optional post-COVID. But for Sri Lankan applicants competing for aid, a strong SAT/ACT still helps your file stand out. Plan for one good sitting. -
Can I work off-campus on F-1? expand_more
Generally no — F-1 holders can only work on-campus during the first year, capped at 20 hours/week during term. After that, you can apply for CPT (curricular practical training) tied to your degree. -
What's the difference between OPT and STEM OPT? expand_more
Standard OPT is 12 months of work authorisation after graduation. STEM OPT extends that by 24 months for graduates of STEM-designated programs — total 36 months. Confirm your program's CIP code is on the STEM list before enrolling. -
Is the visa interview really difficult? expand_more
For genuine students with clear funding and study plans, refusal rates for Sri Lankan applicants are low. We prep you through a 1-hour mock interview before your appointment. Most refusals come from inconsistent answers or weak ties to home — both fixable.
