Europe & UK
UK
LKR 7.5M – 12M
Cost lever: 3-year degree saves a year of costs
The UK is more affordable than many Sri Lankan families expect — undergraduate degrees are 3 years (vs. 4 in most other destinations) and master's programs are 1 year. That "compressed" structure saves substantial money on living costs even if tuition is high.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardGermany
LKR 4.5M / year (Sperrkonto refundable)
Cost lever: Public unis: free or near-free tuition
Germany is the cheapest top-tier study destination on earth. Public universities charge €0 tuition for non-EU students in most states (Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria charge €1,500–€3,000/year). The €11,904 Sperrkonto looks like a cost on paper — it isn't. The money is released to you at €992/month after arrival.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardIreland
LKR 8M – 14M / year
Cost lever: 1-year Master's saves a full year
Ireland's headline numbers look high — Dublin rents are EU-top-five and Master's tuition runs €10,000–€26,000/year — but the 1-year Master's structure and the 24-month Stay Back together produce a faster return than UK or US equivalents. Tech and pharma sector salaries (€40,000–€55,000 graduate offers) recoup tuition fast.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardNetherlands
LKR 7M – 11M / year
Cost lever: Holland Scholarship: €5,000 one-off
The Netherlands runs €8,000–€18,000/year non-EU tuition for most programmes — half the UK and a third of the US. Amsterdam and Utrecht rents are EU-high; Eindhoven, Groningen and Maastricht are 30–40% cheaper. The 12-month Orientation Year after graduation gives you space to recover the investment.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardFrance
LKR 5M – 32M / year
Cost lever: €2,770/yr public-uni tuition (non-EU)
France is two markets in one. Public universities (Sorbonne, Dauphine, the Universités) charge non-EU students €2,770–€3,770/year — among the cheapest in the EU. Grandes Écoles (HEC Paris, INSEAD, ESSEC, emlyon) charge €20,000–€80,000 for the full programme. Pick the right side of this divide and your total spend halves.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardSwitzerland
LKR 8M – 25M / year
Cost lever: ETH/EPFL: CHF 1,460/year tuition
Switzerland's cost structure is split sharply. ETH Zurich and EPFL Lausanne charge CHF 1,460/year (~LKR 500k) in tuition — the cheapest world-top-30 universities anywhere. EHL Lausanne, Glion and Les Roches charge CHF 35,000–CHF 50,000/year for hospitality. The lever is living costs: Zurich, Geneva and Lausanne are globally top-10 expensive cities.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardMalta
LKR 5M – 9M / year
Cost lever: EU's cheapest tuition (€1,080/year)
Malta is the cheapest EU destination by a wide margin. University of Malta non-EU undergraduate tuition runs €1,080–€2,180/year for most subjects, €5,400–€11,000 for Master's. Add living costs 30–40% below Dublin or Amsterdam, and Year 1 can come in under LKR 6M — the lowest entry point to an EU degree.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardFinland
LKR 6.5M – 10.5M / year
Cost lever: 50–100% scholarships at Aalto / Helsinki
Finnish tuition for non-EU students runs €8,000–€18,000/year — mid-range for Europe. Aalto and Helsinki regularly award 50–100% scholarships to strong Sri Lankan applicants, bringing the effective rate to zero. Living costs are reasonable outside Helsinki: Tampere, Oulu and Turku run €750–€900/month.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardAustria
LKR 5.5M – 6M / year
Cost lever: €726/semester at public universities
Austria is one of the EU's lowest-tuition destinations. Public universities (TU Wien, University of Vienna, WU, Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg) charge non-EU students €726.72/semester — about €1,500/year total. Vienna rents are mid-range (€500–€800/month for student housing); Graz, Innsbruck and Linz run 30% cheaper.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardItaly
LKR 5M – 14M / year
Cost lever: ISEE income-scaled tuition (€900+/yr)
Italian tuition splits into two tracks. Public universities (Sapienza Rome, Bologna, Padova) use the ISEE Parificato income-scaled system — middle-income Sri Lankan families typically pay €900–€2,800/year. Private business schools (Bocconi, MIP) charge €15,000–€24,000/year. The choice determines whether Year 1 costs LKR 5M or LKR 14M.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardSweden
LKR 6M – 12.5M / year
Cost lever: Swedish Institute fully-funded scholarship
Swedish non-EU tuition runs SEK 90,000–SEK 290,000/year (~LKR 2.5M–8M/year). Top universities (KTH, Lund, Uppsala) regularly award significant scholarships through the Swedish Institute and institutional programmes. Living costs in Stockholm are EU-high (SEK 12,000–14,000/month); Lund, Uppsala and Gothenburg run 20–30% cheaper.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardAmericas
Canada
LKR 7.2M – 14.4M / year
Cost lever: The GIC is refunded over Year 1
Canada's headline number looks large — the CAD 20,635 GIC creates a one-time cash flow squeeze before you even arrive — but the GIC is refunded to you over Year 1, and Canadian tuition runs 30–40% below comparable US programs. Combined with the 3-year PGWP and Express Entry residency pathway, Canada offers strong long-term value. (Note: the SDS fast-track closed in Nov 2024 — applications now go through the standard process, which doesn't change costs.)
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardUSA
LKR 11M – 24M / year
Cost lever: Need-blind aid for matched profiles
The USA has the widest cost range of any destination — undergrad at a public state university in Texas can cost USD 30,000/year total, while a fully-funded PhD at MIT can cost you zero. The right strategy isn't about finding cheap schools; it's about finding schools that fund your profile.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardAsia-Pacific
Australia
LKR 10.5M – 14.5M / year
Cost lever: Regional cities save AUD 7k/yr
Australia requires you to demonstrate AUD 29,710/year in living funds upfront — so the cost picture is unusually transparent compared to other destinations. Total Year 1 budget for most Sri Lankan students lands between LKR 10.5M and LKR 14.5M, before any scholarship.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardNew Zealand
LKR 8.5M – 13.5M / year
Cost lever: Domestic PhD fees: NZD 7–9k/yr
New Zealand is competitive with Australia and 20–30% cheaper than the UK — and all 8 NZ universities sit in the QS global top 450. Immigration NZ requires NZD 20,000/year in proof of living funds for your visa, which sets the realistic floor for Year 1 living costs.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardSouth Korea
LKR 3.6M – 8.1M / year
Cost lever: GKS = fully funded for top applicants
South Korea offers some of the lowest tuition of any major study destination — public universities run ~KRW 4M/semester for international students. Combined with the fully-funded Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), Korea is one of the few destinations where a top Sri Lankan applicant can study at a global top-50 university essentially for free.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardSingapore
LKR 8M – 13M / year (with grant)
Cost lever: MOE Grant cuts tuition 75%
Singapore looks expensive at headline tuition rates — but the Ministry of Education's Tuition Grant slashes fees by ~75% in exchange for a 3-year work bond at a Singapore-registered employer. For most Sri Lankan students this transforms NUS / NTU / SMU into one of the best graduate-recruiting destinations globally.
Full cost breakdown arrow_forwardFour levers families pull to bring the number down
Every Sri Lankan student who lands abroad has pulled at least two of these. The headline figure is the starting line, not the finish line.
Scholarships (more than your family thinks)
Lanka Scholar applies you to every scholarship you qualify for, at no extra cost. UK departmental awards average £3k–£15k off tuition. Korean GKS is fully funded. US need-blind schools cover 100% of demonstrated need. Australian G8 universities cut 25–50% for high-achievers.
City choice — the biggest single lever
A QS Top-100 degree from Sheffield, Adelaide, Winnipeg or Wellington costs 30–40% less to live in than the capital — same university, smaller spend. Over a 3-year program, the saving often equals a full year of tuition.
Funded programs (especially PhDs and STEM MS)
Most US, NZ, Australian, German and Korean STEM PhDs are funded: tuition waiver plus monthly stipend. Net positive over 4–5 years for the right candidate. KAIST, POSTECH and Max Planck fund MS students too.
Payment structuring
Pay tuition in 2–3 installments and your funds keep earning 16–18% in a Sri Lankan bank between transfers. Time forex against the LKR cycle. Structure sponsor accounts for the visa rules. Small moves, real LKR.

-
Are these numbers real or marketing fluff? expand_more
Real. Each country page lists the exchange rate assumption explicitly and the date the figures were last verified. We update every page quarterly. Last verification: May 2026. -
Do you charge a service fee? expand_more
No. Lanka Scholar is free for students — universities pay us a commission when you enrol. You pay tuition and visa fees directly to the institutions, never to us. No agent fee, no registration fee. -
How realistic are scholarships for Sri Lankan applicants? expand_more
Realistic for academically prepared students. We submit you to every scholarship you qualify for as part of normal application service. For most Sri Lankan students who engage early, scholarships reduce total costs by 20–50%. -
Can my family afford this without selling property? expand_more
For many destinations, yes — especially Europe, South Korea, Dubai, and regional cities in NZ / Canada / Australia. We work backward from your family's budget to a realistic destination shortlist. -
What if the LKR rate drops before I pay tuition? expand_more
Time your transfers — pay each tuition installment when the rate is favourable, not all upfront. Many families lock in forward rates with their bank for the first installment. Sri Lankan bank deposits also tend to outpace LKR depreciation over typical study periods.
