Why this works

Universities have always had alternatives to IELTS.

IELTS is one way to prove English ability — not the only way. Universities accept three other categories of evidence, and Sri Lankan applicants usually have at least one.

description

MOI letter

A short letter from your school or university confirming your studies were conducted in English. Most institutions issue it in 1–3 days.

verified

English-medium recognition

Universities trust Edexcel, Cambridge International, and English-medium national curricula as equivalent to IELTS 6.0–6.5.

public

Country agreements

UK, Australia, NZ, and Canada explicitly list Sri Lanka as an MOI-accepted country for many programmes.

Who qualifies

Six independent paths. Any one is usually enough.

You don't need to have done English-medium schooling to qualify. Many applicants are eligible through more than one of these paths without realising it.

  • 1

    O/L English — Grade A, B, or sometimes C

Most Sri Lankan students from local-curriculum schools

  • 2

A/L English — good pass grade

A/L students who took English as a subject

  • 3

A degree completed fully in English

    Master's and PhD applicants with English-medium bachelor's

  • 4

Cambridge International / Edexcel / IB

International school and English-medium private school students

  • 5

An MOI letter from your school or university

Anyone whose institution will confirm English as the language of instruction

  • 6

    A university interview in English

A growing number of universities offer this as a substitute

Honest note: not every university accepts every path, and grades like O/L English Grade C are borderline at some institutions. We tell you which of your target programmes accept which path before you apply — we never claim a waiver until the university confirms it.

Paperwork

What you'll need

The waiver process is light on paperwork — most students assemble everything in a week. We provide templates and walk your school registrar through the wording.

  • check_circle MOI letter from your school or university (we have templates)
  • check_circle Final transcripts noting the language of instruction
  • check_circle Sometimes a principal or registrar signature on school letterhead
  • check_circle Standard application docs (SOP, references, passport)

Frequently asked

IELTS waiver — your questions answered

Twelve questions Sri Lankan applicants ask us most often, with honest answers.

Can I really skip IELTS to study abroad from Sri Lanka? expand_more
Yes — most Sri Lankan applicants qualify for an IELTS waiver through at least one of six paths: O/L English (Grade A, B, or sometimes C), A/L English, an English-medium degree, an international qualification (Cambridge / Edexcel / IB), an MOI letter, or a university interview in English. Around 302 of our 357 programmes offer a waiver mechanism for eligible Sri Lankan students. Which path your target university accepts depends on the programme — we confirm it with the admissions office before you apply.
Will my O/L English grade qualify me for an IELTS waiver? expand_more
Often, yes. A Grade A or B in Sri Lankan O/L English is widely accepted as evidence of English proficiency by universities in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Grade C is borderline — some universities accept it on its own, others want A/L English or an MOI letter alongside it. Send us your O/L results when you enquire about a programme and we'll tell you exactly where you stand.
Does A/L English count as a waiver? expand_more
Yes — a good pass in A/L General English is accepted by many universities as a standalone waiver, particularly for Bachelor's applicants from the local Sri Lankan curriculum. It's a stronger signal than O/L English alone. Pair it with an MOI letter for the widest pool of eligible programmes.
My degree was taught in English — do I still need IELTS for a Master's? expand_more
In most cases, no. A Bachelor's degree completed fully in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan or foreign — is the most universally accepted waiver path for Master's and PhD applicants. You'll need transcripts that note the language of instruction, plus an MOI letter from your university to back it up.
Do Cambridge, Edexcel, or IB qualifications work as an IELTS waiver? expand_more
Yes — Cambridge International, Edexcel, and IB qualifications are recognised by virtually every university we work with as equivalent to IELTS 6.0–6.5. Students from English-medium schools like Lyceum International, Colombo International, Asian International, OKI, Gateway, Belvoir, Stafford, and Elizabeth Moir typically qualify automatically through this path.
What is an MOI letter and how do I get one? expand_more
An MOI (Medium of Instruction) letter is a short document from your school or university confirming that your studies were conducted and assessed in English. Most institutions issue it within 1–3 working days on official letterhead at no cost. We have templates and will guide your registrar through the exact wording universities expect — letters older than 24 months usually need to be reissued, which is free.
Can a university interview replace IELTS? expand_more
For some programmes, yes. A growing number of universities — especially in the UK, Australia, and Singapore — offer a short English-language interview as a substitute when other waiver evidence is borderline. It's typically 15–20 minutes over Zoom or Teams with an admissions officer, and we'll help you prepare beforehand.
Does the IELTS waiver work for a UK student visa? expand_more
For most courses, yes. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) lets the university — your visa sponsor — confirm your English ability based on the same evidence they accepted at the admission stage; they sign off on your CAS accordingly. The exceptions are pre-sessional English courses and certain regulated programmes (medicine, nursing, teaching) that still require a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test even when the university would otherwise waive it.
Does this work for the US, Canada, Australia, or other destinations? expand_more
Yes, with country-specific nuances. US universities are less standardised — some accept O/L English, others ask for Duolingo or TOEFL instead. Canadian universities recognise Sri Lankan English-medium qualifications well, especially with an MOI letter. Australia and New Zealand explicitly accept MOI-based waivers from Sri Lanka for most non-clinical programmes. We confirm the specific waiver path for each programme in your shortlist before you apply.
What if the course I want still requires IELTS? expand_more
We'll tell you upfront and help you plan. For programmes that don't waive — usually medicine, nursing, law, and teaching — IELTS is typically 6.0–6.5 overall, which is lighter than most applicants expect. We help with prep timelines, test centres in Colombo and Kandy, and choosing dates that work backwards from your intake.
Who decides whether I get the IELTS waiver — you or the university? expand_more
The university decides. Always. We assess your profile against each programme's published requirements and confirm with the admissions office before you submit. If anyone promises you a guaranteed waiver without contacting the university first, treat it as a red flag.
Is your help with the IELTS waiver process free for students? expand_more
Yes — our services are 100% free for students. We're paid by the universities we partner with, not by you. That includes profile assessment, MOI letter guidance, programme shortlisting, and the full application from start to finish across our four offices in Colombo, Jaffna, Matara, and Batticaloa.
