Standard Study Permit
SDS closed in November 2024. Sri Lankan applications now use the standard study permit route, which typically takes 8 to 16 weeks — plan your timeline around that, not the old 20-day promise.
Up to 3-Year PGWP
The Post-Graduation Work Permit gives you the same length of work authorisation as your study program, up to 3 years — directly leading to PR via Express Entry.
Lower Cost than UK / US

What it costs to study in Canada
Canada uses a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) as upfront proof of funds, which is refunded to you over your first year. Here is what to budget in LKR.

Letter of Acceptance
A formal LoA from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — not all Canadian schools qualify; we help you check.
Proof of funds (GIC optional)
You must show CAD 23,448 in living costs plus Year 1 tuition. A GIC with a recognised Canadian bank is no longer mandatory since SDS closed, but it remains the cleanest way to evidence the money — it sits in your name and is released back to you monthly.
IELTS 6.0+ (Each Band)
No longer an SDS rule, but most Canadian universities still expect 6.0 in every individual band, not just overall.
Tuition Paid Upfront
Year 1 tuition must be paid to the institution before your visa application — receipt forms part of the file.

When to apply for 2026/27
Start your application 6–9 months before the intake you're targeting. Below are this academic year's windows for Canada.
Fall Intake (Primary)
The largest intake — most courses, scholarship competitions, and orientation programs run from September.
Winter Intake
A strong secondary intake at most universities; ideal if you miss the September deadlines or need extra prep time.
Summer Intake
A smaller intake at select institutions for specific postgraduate and college diploma programs.

Can I still use the Student Direct Stream (SDS)? expand_more
No. IRCC closed SDS for every country on 8 November 2024, so there is no fast-track left — all Sri Lankan applications go through the standard study permit process, usually 8 to 16 weeks. You still need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from your province, proof of CAD 23,448 in living costs plus Year 1 tuition, and most universities still want IELTS 6.0 in each band. Master's and PhD applicants at public institutions have been exempt from the PAL requirement since 1 January 2026. -
Is the GIC refunded? expand_more
Yes — the CAD 23,448 is disbursed back to you in monthly instalments through your first year to cover living costs. You don’t lose the money; it just sits with the bank until you arrive. -
Will I really get the Post-Graduation Work Permit? expand_more
Yes, if your program is at least 8 months long and at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The PGWP is issued for the same length as your program, up to 3 years. We confirm DLI status before you apply. -
Can I get PR after graduation? expand_more
Yes — through Express Entry (federal) or a Provincial Nominee Program. A Canadian degree plus one year of skilled work usually clears the threshold. Most graduates land PR within 2–3 years. -
Can my spouse come? expand_more
Yes. Your spouse gets an open work permit for the full duration of your studies and the PGWP. Children attend public schools at no extra cost. -
How fast did Sri Lankan students start going to Canada? expand_more
Canada saw a 443% increase in Sri Lankan student permits between 2019 and 2023 — one of the fastest growth rates globally. There are now over 20,000 active Sri Lankan study permits. Ontario, British Columbia and Nova Scotia have the largest Sri Lankan student communities. -
Which Canadian province is best for Sri Lankan students? expand_more
Ontario (Toronto, Ottawa) offers the widest range of programs and the strongest job market. British Columbia (Vancouver) is the second choice — warm climate, large Asian community. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick offer the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), a faster PR pathway with lower tuition — good if PR speed is the priority over city size.
