What will studying abroad really cost you — in rupees?

University fee pages quote tuition in pounds, dollars and euros — and leave out living costs, visa fees and flights. This calculator adds it all up in LKR, so your family sees the real Year-1 number before you enquire.

What will Year 1 actually cost — in rupees?

Pick a destination, programme and city. We add tuition, 12 months of living and the one-off costs, and show the total in LKR. Takes 20 seconds.

What's in the number

A real budget, not just the tuition fee

Most "cost of studying" pages stop at tuition. Three things decide whether a destination is actually affordable for a Sri Lankan family — and we add all three.

Tuition

The real per-year fee range for your programme, taken straight from our country cost guides — not a single rosy number.

12 months of living

Rent, food and transport for the city you pick, because where you live changes the total more than the university does.

One-time costs

Visa, health surcharge, flights, tests and your first deposit — the costs students forget until they add up.

Frequently asked

About the cost calculator

How accurate is this study abroad cost calculator? expand_more
The figures are transcribed from our country-by-country cost guides, which we verify against university and government sources and review quarterly (last reviewed 28 May 2026). Because tuition varies by university, we show an honest low–high range rather than one number. Always confirm the exact fee with the institution and the live exchange rate with your bank before transferring money.
What exchange rate do you use to show costs in rupees? expand_more
We convert at an indicative rate close to what Sri Lankan banks quote (for example, GBP 1 ≈ LKR 400, EUR 1 ≈ LKR 345, AUD 1 ≈ LKR 210, CAD 1 ≈ LKR 235). The live rate moves daily, so treat the LKR total as a planning figure and check the rate on the day you transfer.
Does the total include living costs, or just tuition? expand_more
Both. We add 12 months of living costs for the city you choose to the tuition and the one-time setup costs, so the headline number is a realistic full Year-1 budget — not just the fee on the university website.
Is this the same as the money I have to show for my visa? expand_more
No — they are different. This calculator estimates what your year will actually cost. The amount you must show in your bank account for the visa is a separate, government-set figure. Use our Proof-of-Funds Calculator for that, and we will reconcile the two for you.
Can the cost be brought down? expand_more
Almost always. Choosing a smaller city, applying for departmental scholarships, paying tuition in instalments, and working the legal part-time hours can each take a large slice off the headline number. Our counsellors do this with you at no cost — universities pay our commission, not you.
Is your help free for students? expand_more
Yes — our service is 100% free for students across all four offices (Colombo, Jaffna, Matara, Batticaloa). We are paid by the universities we partner with, never by you.
