Bachelor of Science in Physics
Heidelberg University
Course Overview
Heidelberg University's BSc in Physics is delivered through one of the oldest and most prestigious physics departments in Europe — Heidelberg University was founded in 1386, and its alumni include 33 Nobel laureates (with strong representation in physics, chemistry, and medicine). The physics faculty has deep ties to the Max Planck Institutes for Astronomy, Nuclear Physics, and Medical Research, plus the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) — all clustered in Heidelberg.
Sri Lankan A-Level applicants with strong physics + mathematics use the Heidelberg BSc as a route into German research and the EU science ecosystem. The three-year curriculum covers classical mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, atomic physics, and a strong lab + computational component. Most teaching in the first 4 semesters is in German with English elective options; the final year and any master's progression is mostly English-medium. As a Baden-Württemberg public university, tuition is €1,500/semester (€3,000/year) for non-EU students.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan Cambridge / Edexcel A-Levels: AAA-A*AA including Mathematics at A and Physics at A.
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: 3 A passes (Physical Science stream) including Combined Mathematics at A and Physics at A.
- check_circle IB Diploma: 34-38 points with HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches) and HL Physics at 6+.
- check_circle uni-assist application required — submit transcripts and VPD.
- check_circle Motivation letter, CV. No interview.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0) — for the English-track electives.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle German B2 (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4) typically required for the first two years of teaching — Heidelberg offers preparatory German courses (Studienkolleg) for non-German applicants.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium A-Levels may submit an MOI letter for English requirements, but German is not waiveable for this programme.

Career Outcomes & PR
Heidelberg physics graduates progress overwhelmingly into Master's (Heidelberg, LMU, TU Munich, ETH Zurich, EPFL) and onward to PhD positions at Max Planck Institutes, CERN, DESY, GSI Darmstadt, or international labs. For graduates entering industry directly, Germany's 18-month post-study job-search visa applies. Employers include BASF, Roche, Bayer, Siemens Healthineers, ASML (across the border in NL), Trumpf (laser systems), Carl Zeiss, and the German research foundation. EU Blue Card pathway at graduate-level offers. Sri Lankan returnees route into research positions at the Institute of Fundamental Studies (Kandy), academia (Peradeniya, Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura), and technical roles at SLINTEC and SLAEB.
