Common questions about studying in Sweden

Don't see your question? WhatsApp a Sweden counsellor — we usually reply within the hour, weekdays.

  • Do I need Swedish? expand_more
Not for English-taught Master's — over 1,000 run entirely in English at KTH, Lund, Uppsala, Karolinska and others. For Bachelor's at most Swedish universities, you need Swedish proficiency. A1–A2 Swedish helps with daily life; English is widely spoken in cities.
  • How competitive is Karolinska for international students? expand_more
Very — Karolinska is the most prestigious medical research university in Europe. Master's admissions are highly selective. Strong Sri Lankan applicants with excellent A/L science scores and a clear research orientation can compete. Worth talking through with a counsellor about scholarship targeting.
  • How does the personnummer affect daily life? expand_more
The personnummer is your Swedish national ID number, issued once you've been in Sweden for 12+ months. It unlocks public healthcare, banking, mobile contracts, and most public services. Before getting it, you operate on a coordination number (samordningsnummer) — workable but more limited.
  • Can I work during study? expand_more
Yes — no statutory hour limit during study (the residence permit is study-purpose, but Sweden does not cap weekly hours). Most Sri Lankan students work 20 hours/week to balance study, earning SEK 130–170/hour in part-time roles.
  • What is the Swedish Institute Scholarship? expand_more
A fully-funded scholarship for non-EU students covering tuition, monthly living stipend and travel — the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals. Highly competitive but Sri Lankan applicants with development-sector experience are competitive.
