York University International Student Scholarship

York University offers one of Canada's most generous international undergraduate scholarship packages — running on a tiered system. The flagship International Student Scholarship of Distinction is worth CAD 35,000 (CAD 8,750/year × 4 yrs). The Global Leader of Tomorrow Award is worth CAD 80,000. The top-tier President's International Scholarship of Excellence is worth CAD 180,000 over four years — effectively covering all tuition. Selection across all tiers is automatic with the UG admission application.

Open for September 2027 entry — UG application deadline 15 February 2027 (international applicants). Dates follow the same annual pattern — confirm the current round before applying.

info How this award actually works

account_balance

Who awards it

York University — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.

how_to_reg

How you are considered

Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.

payments

What it covers

CAD 35,000-180,000 Over 4 Years. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.

handshake

Where we come in

We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.

Automatic Consideration

Every eligible international applicant is automatically considered. The top-tier President's Scholarship requires an additional leadership statement (300-500 words) within the UG application.

Maintain GPA to Renew

All tiers are renewable across the 4 years, contingent on maintaining a minimum GPA at York (typically 7.50/9.00 for Distinction, 8.00 for higher tiers).

account_tree Application Process

Apply to York by 15 February

Submit your UG application via the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) or directly to York. Complete all transcripts and English proficiency results by the deadline.

Submit the leadership statement (top tier only)

For President's International Scholarship of Excellence consideration, complete the additional 300-500 word leadership statement within the York supplementary application.

Admissions review + ranking

York's Admissions Office reviews academic results and (for top tier) the leadership statement. All scholarship decisions are made internally — no interview.

Scholarship offer with admission

Scholarship offers arrive alongside or shortly after the academic admission. Accept your admission and the scholarship is applied to your tuition automatically each year.

Why York?

York is Canada's third-largest university, located in Toronto. Particularly strong in business (Schulich), liberal arts, and the sciences. Toronto's large Sri Lankan community and York's significant international cohort make it an accessible first stop for Sri Lankan undergraduates.

Looking for a scholarship because of the cost?

Then start here instead. Scholarships are competitive, usually partial, and decided by someone else — they are the least reliable way to make studying abroad affordable. Your destination and course choice move the number far more, and both are entirely within your control.
