UWA Global Excellence Scholarship
The University of Western Australia is a Group of Eight research university in Perth, and its Global Excellence Scholarship is the most straightforward major Australian award a Sri Lankan applicant can plan around — because the amount is determined by a published table, not by a competition. There is no essay, no referee and no separate application form. UWA converts your Sri Lankan results into an equivalent ATAR for undergraduate entry, or a UWA weighted average mark (WAM) for postgraduate coursework entry, and pays accordingly. On the published undergraduate bands, an equivalent ATAR of 98.00 or above earns AUD 12,000 a year (about LKR 2.52 million), 90.00 to 97.95 earns AUD 10,000, and 85.00 to 89.95 earns AUD 6,000 — carried across up to four years, so a top band on a four-year degree totals AUD 48,000, roughly LKR 10 million. On postgraduate coursework the bands are a WAM of 85.00 and above for AUD 12,000 a year, 75.00 to 84.99 for AUD 10,000, and 65.00 to 74.99 for AUD 6,000, over two years. Because the scale is published, you can work out in advance what your A/L results or your Sri Lankan bachelor's average are likely to be worth, and you can see exactly what a slightly stronger result is worth in rupees — useful leverage if you are deciding whether to resit. The important honesty: this is a partial award. Australian international tuition for a Go8 university runs far above these figures, so a AUD 12,000 a year scholarship reduces a large bill rather than removing it, and it does not cover living costs, which the Australian student visa requires you to evidence separately. It also cannot be held alongside another UWA tuition reduction or academic scholarship, and several professional courses are excluded outright.

fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Open to All Nationalities
The scholarship is for international students from any country, so Sri Lankan citizens are eligible on the same terms as everyone else. What decides your award is your academic result, not where you are from.
Equivalent ATAR 85.00 or WAM 65.00 Minimum
Undergraduate applicants need an equivalent ATAR of at least 85.00; postgraduate coursework applicants need a UWA weighted average mark of at least 65.00. Ask UWA international admissions how your specific A/L or Sri Lankan degree results convert before assuming a band — the conversion, not your raw marks, determines the money.
No Separate Application
The award is applied automatically to eligible students once final transcripts are submitted and an offer is made for an eligible course. There is no scholarship form to miss, but you must get complete final transcripts in.
Several Courses Are Excluded
Assured Pathways to Medicine and Dental Medicine are excluded at undergraduate level; the Juris Doctor, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine, Doctor of Optometry and micro-credentials are excluded at postgraduate level. Combined bachelor's degrees, including five-year engineering routes, are eligible.
Cannot Be Combined with Other UWA Awards
You cannot hold this alongside another UWA tuition fee reduction or academic scholarship. If you are offered a country or partner discount as well, compare the totals in rupees before choosing.
You Must Meet Retention Conditions
The scholarship continues across the years of your degree only if you meet the conditions set out in the terms and conditions, which cover academic progress and enrolment load. Read the terms document before assuming the full multi-year total is guaranteed.
account_tree Application Process
Check your course is eligible and get your conversion
Confirm your target course is not on the exclusion list, then ask UWA international admissions how your Sri Lankan A/L results or bachelor's average convert to an equivalent ATAR or WAM. That single number decides your band.
Apply for admission with complete final transcripts
Apply directly to UWA or through an authorised representative. The scholarship is assessed on final transcripts, so an incomplete or provisional record can leave you assessed in a lower band or not at all.
Check the scholarship appears in your offer
Because there is no separate application, the offer letter is where the award shows up. Verify the annual amount, the number of years and the retention conditions are stated in writing before paying a deposit.
Plan the rest of the funding honestly
Work out the full course fee, subtract the scholarship, and add living costs. Australia requires student visa applicants to evidence living costs on top of tuition, and Perth rents have risen sharply. Convert everything into rupees at 210 to the Australian dollar before committing.
Apply for your Australian student visa (subclass 500)
Sri Lankan applicants lodge the subclass 500 visa online with the Confirmation of Enrolment, evidence of funds, Overseas Student Health Cover and the Genuine Student requirement. Sri Lanka sits in a higher evidentiary tier for Australian student visas, so prepare thorough financial documentation and a coherent study plan — weak applications are refused on genuineness grounds even where funds exist.
Why UWA?
UWA is Western Australia's oldest university and a member of the Group of Eight, Australia's research-intensive alliance, with particular strength in agriculture, marine and earth sciences, engineering, medicine and business. Its Crawley campus on the Swan River is among the most attractive in the country. Perth's advantage for Sri Lankan students is practical rather than romantic: it is in a time zone close to home, has an established South Asian community, and living costs have historically sat below Sydney's and Melbourne's, though rents have tightened. Australian post-study work rights depend on the level and length of your qualification and current policy settings, so verify what your specific course leads to rather than relying on general claims.
