Uppsala IPK Master's Scholarship
The Uppsala IPK Master's Scholarship (Uppsala University IP Kandidatscholarship) covers 100% of the tuition fee for selected non-EU/EEA Master's students at Uppsala University, Sweden's oldest university (founded 1477) and consistently the country's top-ranked institution. Tuition at Uppsala for non-EU/EEA Master's students is approximately SEK 110,000-145,000/year (LKR 3.5M-4.6M/year), so the full waiver represents major savings. Note: IPK covers tuition ONLY — you need separate funding (~SEK 9,800/month = LKR 312k/month minimum) for living costs, which is the basis Swedish Migration Agency uses for residence permit applications. Around 20-30 IPK awards are made annually across all Master's programmes. Sri Lankan applicants with strong academic profiles across humanities, social sciences, sciences, and engineering are eligible.

Uppsala Master's Admission
You must be applying for an eligible Master's programme at Uppsala University. Most Uppsala Master's programmes participate, but a few specialist programmes (e.g. some clinical Master's) are excluded. Confirm eligibility in the programme page on uu.se.
Non-EU/EEA Nationality
Open to non-EU/EEA international students who would otherwise pay overseas tuition. Sri Lankan citizens applying from Sri Lanka are exactly the target profile. EU/EEA students do not pay overseas tuition and so are not eligible.
Outstanding Academic Record
Selection is highly competitive — typically the top 5-10% of Uppsala's non-EU/EEA Master's applicant pool. For Sri Lankan applicants, a first-class Bachelor's degree from Colombo, Peradeniya, Moratuwa, or strong international university is the typical baseline.
English Proficiency
All Uppsala Master's programmes are taught in English. Required: IELTS 6.5+ (no band below 5.5) or TOEFL iBT 90+. Sri Lankan applicants with English-medium degrees can request the MOI-letter waiver where Uppsala permits — most Sri Lankan A/L applicants qualify.
account_tree Application Process
Apply via universityadmissions.se
All Swedish Master's applications go through the centralised universityadmissions.se portal — not directly to Uppsala. Application opens in mid-October, closes 15 January for Autumn intake. Application fee SEK 900.
Submit transcripts + supporting docs
Upload official Bachelor's transcripts, IELTS/TOEFL, CV, motivation letter, and supporting documents (some programmes require GRE, others a portfolio). Document deadline is typically 1 February (slightly after application deadline).
Automatic IPK consideration
When applying via universityadmissions.se, you can indicate Uppsala as a preferred university and the system automatically considers eligible candidates for IPK. There is no separate IPK application form. Selection is made by Uppsala's IPK committee in March-April.
Acceptance + Swedish residence permit
IPK awards are confirmed alongside Master's admission decisions (typically late April). Use the offer + IPK confirmation + proof of living-cost funds to apply for the Swedish residence permit at the Swedish Embassy in New Delhi (Sri Lankan applicants apply via the Delhi consular district).
Why Uppsala?
Uppsala University was founded in 1477 — the Nordic region's oldest university and consistently Sweden's #1 institution. With around 50,000 students and 8 Nobel Prizes among its alumni and faculty, Uppsala is particularly strong in humanities (philosophy, theology), social sciences, life sciences, and pharmaceutical research. The city of Uppsala is 70 km north of Stockholm — a compact university town with cathedral, castle, and excellent quality of life.
