University West Scholarship
University West (Högskolan Väst) is a public Swedish university in Trollhättan, north of Gothenburg, built around work-integrated learning — the idea that a degree should be interleaved with real workplace practice rather than bolted on at the end. Its English-taught Master's sit mainly in production technology, robotics and automation, welding and manufacturing engineering, and informatics. For fee-paying students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, the University West Scholarship reduces the tuition fee by 15 per cent for the duration of the programme. Be realistic about the scale: this is a discount, not a free ride, and it will not by itself make Sweden affordable. What it does do is shave a meaningful slice off an already-moderate Swedish engineering fee at a university whose graduates are wired into Volvo's and GKN Aerospace's supplier network in western Sweden. For Sri Lankan applicants, University West is worth a look precisely because it is not a name everyone applies to — the competition is thinner than at KTH or Chalmers, while the industrial connection is unusually direct. The award is decided by a committee and the decision cannot be appealed, so put real effort into the motivation letter.

Non-EU/EEA Fee-Paying Citizen
Open to citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who pay tuition fees in Sweden. Sri Lankan citizens are eligible; there is no country shortlist.
Admitted to an On-Campus Master's
You must be applying to or admitted to a campus-based Master's programme at University West. Distance and online programmes are outside the scheme.
Motivation Letter
A motivation letter forms part of the scholarship application. Write it about the specific programme and how work-integrated learning fits your career plan in Sri Lanka or abroad — generic letters do badly here.
Committee Decision, No Appeal
A scholarship committee decides the awards and the decision is not open to appeal. Treat the application as your only shot in that cycle and submit complete documents first time.
English Proficiency
Swedish Master's entry requires English 6 (about IELTS 6.5, no band below 5.5) or equivalent. A Sri Lankan English-medium bachelor's with an MOI letter is often accepted in place of a test — confirm with University West admissions before you skip booking IELTS.

Submit your Master's application in Sweden's national admissions round, ranking your University West programme, and pay the application fee. Upload attested transcripts, degree certificate, passport copy and English evidence.
Submit the scholarship application
Between 1 November 2026 and 15 January 2027, complete the separate University West scholarship application including your motivation letter. Programme admission alone does not enter you into the pool.
Await the committee decision
Awards are announced by 1 April 2027. The decision is final and cannot be appealed.
Pay the reduced fee and apply for the residence permit
Pay the first instalment net of the 15 per cent reduction, then apply to Migrationsverket for the student residence permit with your admission letter, fee receipt and proof of maintenance funds.

University West built its identity on work-integrated learning, so placements and industry projects are part of the degree rather than an optional extra. Sitting in western Sweden's manufacturing belt, it has close ties to the aerospace and automotive supply chain — useful if you want your Swedish Master's to convert into a job rather than another degree.
