University of Borås Scholarship
The University of Borås (Högskolan i Borås) is a public university in western Sweden with an unusual specialism: textiles. The Swedish School of Textiles sits here, alongside strong resource-recovery, sustainable-engineering, informatics and library-and-information-science programmes. For students who must pay tuition in Sweden — that is, anyone from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland — Borås offers a scholarship intended to cover approximately 75 per cent of the tuition fee, which is one of the more generous partial awards in the Swedish system. Read the boundaries carefully: it applies to Master's programmes only, and bachelor's and artistic programmes are explicitly outside the scheme. For a Sri Lankan graduate, Borås is a sensible target if your bachelor's is in textile or polymer engineering, apparel or fashion technology, chemical engineering, environmental or resource recovery, or informatics — all fields where Sri Lanka's own industry base gives you a genuine story to tell in the application. The 25 per cent you still pay, plus living costs, must be funded by you and evidenced to Migrationsverket for the residence permit.
The autumn 2026 round has closed; the scholarship application for the autumn 2027 semester opens in December 2026

info How this award actually works
Who awards it
University of Borås (Högskolan i Borås) — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.
How you are considered
Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.
What it covers
Approximately 75% Tuition Fee Coverage. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.
Where we come in
We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.
fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Required to Pay Tuition Fees
The scholarship is for students required to pay tuition in Sweden — citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. Sri Lankan applicants fall into this group and are eligible.
Master's Programmes Only
Bachelor's programmes and artistic programmes are explicitly excluded. Check that the specific Borås Master's you want is inside the scheme before you build your plan around it.
Academic Merit
Selection is competitive and based on your academic record and admission ranking. A strong, subject-relevant bachelor's from a recognised Sri Lankan university — with attested transcripts and a clear class or GPA — is what carries weight.
English Proficiency
You need English 6 (roughly IELTS 6.5, no band below 5.5) or an accepted equivalent. Sri Lankan applicants with an English-medium degree can often evidence this with an MOI letter instead of a test — verify with Borås admissions rather than assuming.
You Fund the Remaining Fee and Living Costs
Roughly a quarter of the tuition fee plus all living expenses remain yours. Migrationsverket requires evidence of maintenance funds for each month of the permit, so plan bank statements early.
account_tree Application Process
Apply through universityadmissions.se
Submit your Master's application in Sweden's national round with your Borås programme ranked, pay the application fee, and upload attested transcripts, degree certificate, passport copy and English evidence.
Apply for the scholarship when the round opens
The Borås scholarship application opens in December for the following autumn semester. Complete the separate scholarship form by its published closing date.
Selection and notification
The university assesses eligible applicants on merit and notifies scholarship holders ahead of the tuition payment deadline.
Pay the balance and apply for the residence permit
Pay the remaining share of tuition, then apply to Migrationsverket for the Swedish student residence permit with your admission letter, scholarship decision and maintenance funds.
Why the University of Borås?
Borås houses the Swedish School of Textiles and has built a distinctive research profile in textiles, sustainable resource recovery and information science. For Sri Lankan students coming out of an apparel-and-textiles economy, few European universities line up as neatly with what you already know.

Looking for a scholarship because of the cost?
Then start here instead. Scholarships are competitive, usually partial, and decided by someone else — they are the least reliable way to make studying abroad affordable. Your destination and course choice move the number far more, and both are entirely within your control.
