SUTD Design and Innovation Scholarship

The SUTD Design and Innovation Scholarship is one of Singapore's most prestigious design-focused undergraduate awards — a full tuition waiver plus a SGD 6,000 annual living allowance for the duration of the four-year Bachelor's. Available across all four SUTD pillars (Architecture & Sustainable Design, Engineering Product Development, Engineering Systems & Design, Information Systems Technology & Design), the award favours applicants with a demonstrated track record of building, prototyping, hacking, or designing — not just exam grades. Sri Lankan applicants from STEM-focused schools with portfolios of projects, hackathons, or competitions are strong candidates.

Open to all international students, including Sri Lankan citizens. Singapore citizens and PRs apply through separate Singapore-citizen scholarship pools. The Design and Innovation Scholarship does not carry a service bond.

Strong Academics + Design / Innovation Track Record

Strong A/L results (typically 3-4 As) plus evidence of building or making — Olympiads, hackathons, robotics competitions, design portfolios, founder roles, research projects, or significant maker-space output. Pure exam grades alone rarely secure this scholarship.

English Proficiency

Sri Lankan applicants with A/L English at C+ or higher typically satisfy SUTD's English requirement without a separate test. IELTS 6.5+ / TOEFL iBT 90+ is accepted where required.

1

Apply to SUTD undergraduate admissions

Submit your SUTD application via the online portal during the international round (typically September to mid-January). The scholarship application is integrated — tick the relevant scholarship box and upload an optional design portfolio.

2

Shortlist + interview

Shortlisted applicants are invited for an online Discovery Day-style interview, typically February–March. The interview includes a design problem-solving exercise and a discussion of past projects.

3

Scholarship offer in March or April

Successful applicants receive a conditional scholarship offer alongside admission. The offer is conditional on final A/L results meeting the published threshold.

4

Accept + arrange Singapore visa

Accept the offer through the SUTD portal and pay the deposit. Apply for the Singapore Student's Pass via SOLAR+. The tuition waiver and living allowance start in Term 1 (May).

Why SUTD?

SUTD is Singapore's youngest autonomous university (founded 2009 with MIT collaboration) — a design-and-technology-focused institution that combines engineering, design, and systems thinking in every undergraduate pillar. Strong industry placements across Singapore's design, tech, and architecture firms.
