Södertörn University Tuition Fee Waiver

Södertörn University sits in Flemingsberg in southern Stockholm, a twenty-minute commuter train from the city centre, and is known for interdisciplinary teaching in the social sciences and humanities — journalism, political science, environmental studies, Baltic and East European area studies — alongside media technology and informatics. Its tuition fee waiver covers 90 per cent of the fee, leaving you to pay the remaining tenth plus living costs, which for a Stockholm-area programme is a substantial saving. The conditions are specific: you apply through Sweden's national admissions portal, universityadmissions.se, to a one-year or two-year Master's programme at Södertörn, and Södertörn must be your first-choice ranking. For Sri Lankan applicants coming from a social sciences, media, journalism, international relations or environmental background, this is one of the better-value Master's routes into the Stockholm region, where equivalent programmes at Stockholm University or KTH carry far heavier fee bills and no comparable waiver. Remember that Migrationsverket's maintenance requirement for a Stockholm-based permit is unaffected by the waiver — you still evidence living funds for every month.

Awarded annually alongside the national admissions round; the 2026/27 application period has closed and the next round for 2027/28 opens with the international admissions cycle in autumn 2026 — confirm dates on sh.se

info How this award actually works

account_balance

Who awards it

Södertörn University (Södertörns högskola) — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.

how_to_reg

How you are considered

Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.

payments

What it covers

90% Tuition Fee Waiver. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.

handshake

Where we come in

We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.

fact_check Eligibility Criteria

public

From Outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland

The waiver exists for students from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland — those who pay tuition in Sweden. Sri Lankan citizens are eligible with no additional nationality restriction.

school

One- or Two-Year Master's Applicant

You must apply to a one-year or two-year Master's programme at Södertörn. Single courses and bachelor's programmes are not part of the scheme.

task_alt

Södertörn Ranked First Choice

The application must be made through universityadmissions.se with the Södertörn programme ranked as your first choice. Ranking it second or lower takes you out of the waiver pool, so decide your priority before you submit.

account_balance_wallet

You Pay the Remaining 10% and Living Costs

A tenth of the tuition fee stays with you, as do all living expenses in one of Europe's more expensive capitals. Build both into the maintenance funds you show Migrationsverket.

English Proficiency

Master's entry requires English 6, roughly IELTS 6.5 with no band below 5.5, or an accepted equivalent. Sri Lankan applicants with an English-medium bachelor's can often evidence this with an MOI letter — confirm the accepted route with Södertörn admissions.

account_tree Application Process

1

Apply via universityadmissions.se with Södertörn first

Submit your Master's application in the national round, ranking the Södertörn programme first, and pay the application fee. Upload attested transcripts, degree certificate, passport copy and English evidence.

2

Submit the tuition fee waiver application

Complete Södertörn's separate waiver application within the published period for your intake. Admission alone does not grant the waiver.

3

Selection and notification

Södertörn assesses eligible first-choice applicants and notifies waiver holders before the tuition payment deadline.

4

Pay the remaining fee and apply for the residence permit

Settle the 10 per cent balance, then apply to Migrationsverket for the Swedish student residence permit with your admission letter, waiver decision and proof of maintenance funds.

Why Södertörn University?

Södertörn was founded to widen access to higher education in the Stockholm region and teaches across disciplinary boundaries, with particular strength in journalism, political science, environmental studies and Baltic/East European studies. A 90 per cent waiver puts a Stockholm-area Master's within reach of budgets that would not stretch to the city's larger universities.
