SLU Scholarship (Full Tuition Fee Waiver)

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is Sweden's specialist university for the life and environmental sciences — forestry, agriculture, animal science, landscape architecture, food systems, veterinary medicine and environmental economics — with campuses at Uppsala, Alnarp, Umeå and Skara. Its own scholarship is simple in structure and brutal in odds. It covers a full tuition fee waiver and nothing else: no living costs, no travel, no insurance. And SLU states plainly that only about one per cent of applicants receive one. For a Sri Lankan applicant, that combination means two things. First, if you win it, it is genuinely transformative, because Sweden charges non-EU and non-EEA students the full tuition cost while EU citizens pay nothing, and SLU's programme fees run into the hundreds of thousands of Swedish kronor across a two-year master's — check the exact figure on your programme page and convert it before you assume anything. Second, you must have a funded plan that does not depend on winning it, because ninety-nine applicants in a hundred do not. Selection is a combined assessment of your motivation letter and your previous university grades. There is no interview, no referee report and no research proposal, which puts unusual weight on the letter — it is half of the decision, and a generic one wastes the application. Five master's programmes are excluded from the scheme: Outdoor Environments for Health and Well-Being, EmPLANT+, EMABG, EnvEuro and Sustainable Development, several of which are joint or Erasmus Mundus-style degrees with their own funding. The Forest and Landscape bachelor's programme is eligible. Remember too that a tuition waiver does not satisfy the Swedish Migration Agency: you must still evidence maintenance funds for your residence permit, so the Swedish Institute scholarships, which cover living costs and travel as well as fees, remain the more complete route if you can win one.

Fee-Paying Students Only — Sri Lankans Qualify

Sweden charges tuition to citizens of countries outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. Sri Lankan citizens are fee-paying and therefore eligible; EU students, who pay nothing, are not.

Roughly One in a Hundred Succeed

SLU publishes the success rate openly: about one per cent of applicants are awarded a scholarship. Apply by all means, but build your funding plan on the assumption that you will not get it.

The Motivation Letter Is Half the Decision

Awards are decided on a combined assessment of the motivation letter and previous university grades. With no interview and no referees in the process, the letter carries far more weight than it does elsewhere. Write about the specific programme, specific Swedish research groups and specific plans, not general enthusiasm.

Five Master's Programmes Are Excluded

Outdoor Environments for Health and Well-Being, EmPLANT+, EMABG, EnvEuro and Sustainable Development are outside the scheme. Several are joint or consortium degrees carrying their own funding routes — check those instead if one of them is your target.

Tuition Only — No Living Costs

The waiver covers fees and nothing else. Sweden's Migration Agency requires evidence of maintenance funds for every month of your permit, and a tuition waiver does not count towards that. You must still show separate money for living costs, and Swedish living costs are high.

Consider the Swedish Institute Route Too

The Swedish Institute scholarships cover tuition, a monthly living allowance and a travel grant, which makes them more complete than a fee waiver. They are competitive and have their own eligibility rules and calendar, so treat them as a separate application rather than a fallback.

account_tree Application Process

1

Apply through universityadmissions.se in the autumn round

Swedish admission is centralised. Submit your SLU programme choices through the national portal in the international round, which typically opens in October and closes in mid-January for the following autumn. Missing the admission deadline removes the scholarship option entirely.

2

Pay the application fee and submit documents

Non-EU applicants pay a Swedish application fee and must upload certified copies of Sri Lankan degree certificates and transcripts, plus proof of English. Follow the portal's document instructions precisely — incomplete files are simply not assessed.

3

Write a programme-specific motivation letter

Because the letter is half the scholarship assessment, invest in it. Name the courses, the research areas and the Swedish context you want to work in, and connect them to what you intend to do in Sri Lanka or the region afterwards.

4

Submit the scholarship application by the late-February deadline

The scholarship application is separate from the admission application and closes in late February in recent cycles. Confirm the current date on slu.se rather than relying on last year's.

5

Apply for your Swedish residence permit

Sri Lankan students apply online to the Swedish Migration Agency for a residence permit for studies, evidencing admission, comprehensive health insurance, paid or waived tuition and maintenance funds for each month. Processing can take months, so apply as soon as your admission and fee status are settled. Sweden allows graduates to apply for a permit to look for work after finishing.

Why SLU?

SLU is a specialist university rather than a general one, and it ranks highly worldwide in agriculture, forestry and environmental sciences — fields with direct relevance to Sri Lanka's plantation, fisheries, food security and climate-adaptation challenges. Teaching is spread across four campuses, with Uppsala and Alnarp carrying most of the English-taught master's portfolio, and programmes are strongly research-linked with field and laboratory work built in. Sweden's English-taught master's degrees, strong research funding and post-study work permit make it attractive, but it is an expensive country to live in and the fee-paying regime for non-EU students is unforgiving without funding.
