LKAB Scholarship at Luleå University of Technology

The LKAB Scholarship is funded by LKAB, Sweden's state-owned iron-ore mining company, and administered by Luleå University of Technology in Sweden's far north. It is one of the very few Swedish awards that reaches undergraduate level for non-EU students — most Swedish scholarships are Master's-only — and it covers the full tuition fee for the entire length of the programme, provided your study results stay satisfactory. It attaches to the Bachelor programme in Mineral Resource Engineering and to three named Master's programmes: Applied Environmental Geochemistry, Civil Engineering with a Mining and Geotechnical specialisation, and Exploration Geoscience. For a Sri Lankan applicant, this is a narrow but genuinely valuable route: if your A/Ls or your bachelor's sit in the physical sciences, mathematics, geology, mining or civil engineering, you are applying into a field where Sweden is a world leader and where the employer funding the award actually hires graduates. Be clear-eyed about what it does not cover: living expenses in northern Sweden are on you, and Migrationsverket will still want proof of maintenance funds for every month of your residence permit. Priority goes to applicants who put the eligible programme as their first choice in the national admissions round.

Annual cycle — the LKAB Scholarship application window runs 16 October to 28 February, so the round for the autumn 2027 intake opens 16 October 2026

info How this award actually works

account_balance

Who awards it

Luleå University of Technology — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.

how_to_reg

How you are considered

Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.

payments

What it covers

Full Tuition Fee Coverage for the Whole Programme. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.

handshake

Where we come in

We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.

Non-EU/EEA Fee-Paying Applicant

Open to students from a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, i.e. those who pay tuition in Sweden. Sri Lankan citizens qualify on nationality; there is no separate country shortlist to clear.

Admission to an Eligible Programme

You must be applying to the Bachelor programme in Mineral Resource Engineering, or to Applied Environmental Geochemistry, Civil Engineering (Mining and Geotechnical Engineering) or Exploration Geoscience at Master's level. Applicants who rank the eligible programme first are prioritised.

Academic Merit and Continued Progress

Selection is on academic merit. The fee coverage continues for the full programme only while your study results remain satisfactory, so it behaves like a renewable award you have to keep earning.

English Proficiency

Swedish programmes require English 6 (roughly IELTS 6.5 with no band under 5.5) for Master's entry, or English B/6 for the Bachelor route. A Sri Lankan English-medium degree plus an MOI letter is commonly accepted as evidence — check the exact route with LTU admissions before you pay the application fee.

Living Costs Are Not Covered

The award covers tuition only. You still need to show maintenance funds to Migrationsverket for each month of your Swedish residence permit — budget for this in your bank statements well ahead of the visa application.

account_tree Application Process

1

Apply through universityadmissions.se

Submit your programme application in Sweden's national round with the eligible LTU programme ranked first. Upload attested transcripts, your degree or A/L certificates, passport copy and English evidence, and pay the SEK application fee.

2

Submit the separate LKAB Scholarship application

The scholarship has its own application process on the LTU website, open from 16 October to 28 February. Applying to the programme alone does not put you in the scholarship pool.

3

Selection and notification

LTU assesses eligible applicants on merit, prioritising first-choice applicants, and notifies scholarship holders alongside the national admission results.

4

Accept and apply for the residence permit

Accept your place, then apply to Migrationsverket for the student residence permit with your admission letter, scholarship decision and proof of maintenance funds for living costs.

Why Luleå University of Technology?

Luleå sits in the heart of Europe's largest iron-ore mining region and runs Sweden's most specialised mining, geoscience and geotechnical programmes, with research and teaching tied directly to the industry that funds this award. For Sri Lankan students in earth sciences or civil engineering, it is a place where the coursework and the employers are in the same town.
