SFU Major Entrance Scholarship
Simon Fraser University's Major Entrance Scholarships are the institution's flagship entrance awards for outstanding first-year undergraduates. Values range from CAD 10,000 (one-time) to CAD 35,000 over four years for the most prestigious tier (the Gordon M. Shrum Awards). International applicants must apply separately for these awards — they are not automatic. SFU's three Greater Vancouver campuses (Burnaby, Surrey, Vancouver) and its strengths in computing science, communication, and interactive arts make it a strong west-coast Canadian option.

First-Time University Applicant
You must be applying to SFU as a first-time university entrant — not as a transfer student. The award targets students entering Year 1 of a Bachelor's programme at SFU's Burnaby, Surrey, or Vancouver campus.
International or Domestic
Open to both international students and Canadian citizens / permanent residents. Sri Lankan applicants apply through the international pool and are evaluated against international competitor applicants.
Outstanding Academic + Leadership Record
An admission average of 90%+ (typically 3 As+ at A/L) plus a strong track record of leadership and impact — student leadership, sports captaincy, debate, community service, founder roles, or significant academic competitions.
English Proficiency
Meet SFU's standard English requirement — typically IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 88+. The language test result is part of the broader application package.

Submit the SFU undergraduate application
Apply through the SFU online application portal by 1 December for September 2027 entry. International applicants are automatically considered for some smaller automatic awards, but the Major Entrance application is separate.
Complete the Major Entrance application
Submit the dedicated Major Entrance Scholarship application — essays on academic interests and leadership, a CV detailing extracurriculars, and two referee letters. Deadline typically mid-December 2026 for September 2027 entry.
Shortlist and interview
Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an online interview in January or February. Final award decisions are released alongside admissions offers in March or April.
Accept and enrol
Successful applicants accept the offer through goSFU. The award is paid out as a tuition credit each year, contingent on maintaining a SFU CGPA of 3.0+ and full-time enrolment.
