University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship

Most New Zealand postgraduate scholarship money is directed at research degrees — doctorates and thesis Master's. The University of Otago's Coursework Master's Scholarship is one of the few awards aimed at the taught Master's route, which is what the majority of Sri Lankan postgraduate applicants actually pursue. It is worth NZ$10,000 towards fees in the first instance, roughly LKR 1.9 million, and Otago makes 30 of them available. Critically, it is open to both domestic and international applicants, so Sri Lankan students compete on the same basis as New Zealanders. The mechanism is what you need to understand before you plan around it. Because so few are available, application invitations are restricted by a nomination system: you do not apply directly. Once you have been admitted to your programme of choice, the department assesses your suitability for scholarship funding and, if it wishes, nominates you to the Scholarships Office. Candidates who are likely to be nominated will usually need a GPA equivalent to at least an A on their most recent year of study. In practice that means your leverage is entirely in your admission application and your academic record — and in making early contact with the department so they know who you are when nomination time comes. Be clear about scale. NZ$10,000 is a contribution towards fees, not a full waiver: international taught Master's fees at Otago typically run several times that figure, and living costs in Dunedin add roughly NZ$20,000-25,000 a year on top. Treat this as a useful reduction on a self-funded plan, not as the plan itself.

Awarded by departmental nomination following admission, so timing follows Otago's postgraduate admission cycle for the February and July intakes — confirm current details with the Otago Scholarships Office

What it covers

NZ$10,000 Towards Fees for Taught Master's Degrees. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.

Where we come in

We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.

Open to International Applicants

Otago states these scholarships are open to both domestic and international applicants, so Sri Lankan students are eligible on the same terms as New Zealand students.

Coursework Master's Only

For students studying Master's degrees which do not include a full thesis component. Thesis-based Master's candidates are directed to Otago's research scholarships instead.

Around an A Average

Candidates likely to be nominated will usually need a GPA of at least an A on their most recent year of study. Grades from your Sri Lankan degree are what carry this.

Nomination, Not Application

There is no direct application. Once admitted, your department assesses your suitability and advises the Scholarships Office if it wishes to nominate you. Make yourself known to the department early.

account_tree Application Process

1

Apply for admission to a taught Master's

Apply to Otago for the Master's programme you want, confirming that it is a coursework degree without a full thesis component. Submit complete transcripts showing your most recent year's grades clearly.

2

Make early contact with the department

Email the programme coordinator or postgraduate convenor introducing yourself and your interests. Departments nominate candidates they know, and international applicants are easy to overlook from a distance.

3

Secure your admission offer

Nomination only follows admission. Get your offer confirmed early in the cycle so the department has time to consider you before the nomination round.

4

Respond promptly if invited to apply

If nominated, you will be invited to submit a scholarship application. Turn it around quickly and completely.

5

Plan the rest of your funding

Budget for the fee balance after NZ$10,000, plus roughly NZ$20,000-25,000 a year of Dunedin living costs, insurance and flights. Immigration New Zealand will require evidence of these funds for your student visa.

Why the University of Otago?

Otago is New Zealand's oldest university, founded in 1869, with particular strength in health sciences, biomedical research and the humanities. Dunedin is a genuine student city where the university dominates, and living costs are meaningfully lower than Auckland's.
