Guelph International Entrance Scholarships
The University of Guelph in Ontario offers one of the more substantial and better-structured international undergraduate entrance scholarship packages in Canada, and almost all of it is awarded without a separate application. Renewable international scholarships range in total value from CAD 32,000 to CAD 37,500 across four years — at 235 rupees to the Canadian dollar, roughly LKR 7.5 million to LKR 8.8 million against your tuition. The President's International Entrance Scholarship and the University International Scholarship are assessed purely on the admission offer average that Guelph calculates, and for applicants who have not studied a Canadian secondary curriculum the university determines that average by interpreting your curriculum, grading practice and scale — so Sri Lankan A/L and Cambridge or Edexcel results are converted rather than dismissed. Recipients continue to receive a CAD 5,000 award in years two, three and four provided they stay in full-time study and maintain a minimum 80 per cent average in the previous year; the Dean's International Scholarship carries CAD 2,500 a year on the same renewal basis. Above all of these sits the Dr. Franco J. Vaccarino President's Scholarship, Guelph's most prestigious international entrance award: one is given each year to the top international student, valued at CAD 42,500 and bundled with a summer research assistantship, mentorship by a senior professor, and guaranteed first-choice residence in first year. Two dates and conditions govern everything. Your admission file must be complete by the final document deadline of 1 March, and you must be entering the first semester of post-secondary study for the first time — students who have already begun a degree elsewhere fall under a separate one-time CAD 10,000 transfer scholarship instead.

First-Time Post-Secondary Entrants
You must be entering the first semester of post-secondary study for the first time. If you have already started a degree in Sri Lanka or elsewhere, you are assessed under the separate transfer scholarship, which is a one-time CAD 10,000 award.
Complete Admission File by 1 March
Your admission file must be complete by the final document deadline of 1 March for the following September. Missing documents on that date removes you from scholarship consideration even if you are later admitted.
Your Offer Average Decides the Award
Eligibility is based on the admission offer average Guelph calculates. For applicants outside the Canadian secondary system, the university interprets your curriculum, grading practice and scale — so ask admissions early how your A/L or international qualification is likely to convert.
Renewal Requires 80% and Full-Time Study
To keep the CAD 5,000 a year in years two to four you must remain in full-time study and achieve a minimum 80 per cent average in the previous academic year. Plan for the possibility of losing it — an unfunded final two years in Canada is a serious financial exposure.
International Fee-Paying Students
The awards are for international fee-paying students, so Sri Lankan applicants qualify on status. There is no nomination step and no country quota.
Tuition Support, Not Full Funding
Canadian international undergraduate tuition and Ontario living costs both exceed what these awards cover. Canada also requires study permit applicants to evidence tuition plus living funds, and a Guaranteed Investment Certificate is commonly used. Do the four-year arithmetic in rupees before committing.
account_tree Application Process
Apply for admission well before 1 March
Submit your application and every supporting document early. The scholarship outcome depends on a complete file by the document deadline, not on the application date alone.
Ask how your qualification converts
Contact Guelph Admission Services about how Sri Lankan A/Ls or your international qualification will be converted into an offer average. That number determines which scholarship tier you land in.
Apply separately for the top scholarships
The main entrance awards are automatic, but Guelph's most prestigious awards, including the Vaccarino President's Scholarship, have their own application. Check the top-scholarships page and its deadline if you have the profile to compete.
Confirm the renewal terms in writing
Verify the annual amounts, the 80 per cent renewal threshold and the full-time enrolment requirement in your award letter before accepting.
Budget Ontario living costs
Guelph is a smaller city with lower rents than Toronto, about an hour away, but housing, food, transport, health insurance and winter clothing all need budgeting. Convert the total at 235 rupees to the Canadian dollar.
Apply for the Canadian study permit
Sri Lankan applicants apply online with the letter of acceptance, proof of tuition payment and evidence of living funds. Scholarship letters strengthen the financial element. Allow generous processing time and check whether the current Provincial Attestation Letter requirement applies to your programme.
Why Guelph?
Guelph is a mid-sized comprehensive university about an hour west of Toronto, best known for veterinary medicine, agriculture and food science, biological sciences, and its hospitality and business programmes — a genuinely useful profile for Sri Lankan students given the importance of agriculture, food processing and tourism at home. The city is small, safe and much cheaper to live in than Toronto or Vancouver while still being inside the Greater Golden Horseshoe employment region. Canada's post-graduation work permit rules have tightened and now depend on programme and field, so verify the current eligibility for your exact course rather than relying on older guidance.
