University of Gothenburg Study Scholarship
The University of Gothenburg Study Scholarship is a merit award covering full or partial tuition for talented non-EU/EEA Master's students — a key route into Swedish higher education, where non-EU students otherwise pay tuition. Gothenburg is one of Sweden's largest and most respected universities, strong across business and economics, the social sciences, IT, and the health sciences, in a vibrant west-coast harbour city. For a Sri Lankan first-class graduate, a tuition waiver makes a Swedish Master's much more affordable, leaving living costs as the main expense (and Sweden has a relatively generous post-study job-seeking residence permit). The scholarship covers tuition only, not living costs, so budget for those separately; we help you combine this with the Swedish Institute and other awards where possible, and build a realistic LKR plan.

fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Apply to a Gothenburg Master's
You must apply to an eligible Master's at the University of Gothenburg for autumn 2026 entry via the national admissions portal. Sri Lankan applicants need a relevant Bachelor's; a first-class or strong upper-second profile is competitive.
Non-EU/EEA Fee-Paying Status
The scholarship is for students liable to pay tuition — i.e. non-EU/EEA citizens, including Sri Lankans. EU/EEA students study tuition-free and aren't eligible. There is no further nationality restriction.
Merit-Based Selection
Awards are competitive and based on academic merit (and, for some, motivation). Strong grades and relevant background materially improve your chances against the international pool.
English Proficiency
Programmes are taught in English; you'll typically need IELTS 6.5+ (Sweden's 'English 6' equivalent). Sri Lankan applicants with an English-medium undergraduate degree usually qualify via MOI waiver where accepted.

Selection
The university assesses academic merit and awards full or partial tuition waivers to the strongest candidates. Outcomes follow the admission results in spring.
Accept and apply for a Swedish residence permit
Accept your place and scholarship, then apply for the Swedish student residence permit, showing funds for living costs. Sweden offers a job-seeking residence permit after graduation.
