University of Bergamo Top International Students' Scholarship
The University of Bergamo's Top International Students' Scholarship is one of the larger cash awards available at an Italian public university, and it is unusual in requiring the GRE. The grant is EUR 8,000 gross a year, paid in four instalments of EUR 4,000, which over a two-year Italian Master's comes to around EUR 16,000 — roughly LKR 5.5 million at current rates. The call is explicitly open to both European Union citizens and non-European Union citizens, so Sri Lankan applicants are directly eligible rather than being squeezed into a development-cooperation side scheme. Three conditions decide who actually gets it. You must submit a GRE Revised General Test score before the deadline, which means booking a test slot early — GRE availability in Colombo is limited and the score takes time to report. You must be under 30. And your qualifying degree must come from a non-Italian institution, which is the norm for Sri Lankan applicants. You also self-declare that you hold no other scholarship. Bergamo sits in Lombardy, less than an hour from Milan by train, with its own international airport and living costs well below Milan's — a practical base for a Master's in engineering, management, economics or humanities.
The call published 8 June 2026 covers A.Y. 2026/27 and 2027/28; the 2026/27 application deadline of 10 July 2026 has passed, so check unibg.it for the next round's opening

info How this award actually works
Who awards it
University of Bergamo (Università degli Studi di Bergamo) — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.
How you are considered
Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.
What it covers
EUR 8,000 Gross Per Year, Paid in Four Instalments of EUR 4,000. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.
Where we come in
We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.
fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Open to EU and Non-EU Citizens
The call states the scholarship is open to European Union citizens and non-European Union citizens. Sri Lankan applicants qualify with no separate country list to satisfy.
GRE Score Is Compulsory
A GRE Revised General Test score must be submitted before the deadline. Book your Colombo test date months ahead — slots are limited and official score reporting is not instant.
Qualification From a Non-Italian Institution
Your qualifying degree must come from an institution outside Italy. A Sri Lankan bachelor's meets this; you will need attested transcripts and, for enrolment, a Declaration of Value or equivalent recognition document.
Under 30 and No Other Scholarship
Applicants must be under 30 and self-declare that they hold no other scholarship. If you are also shortlisted for a government award, you will have to choose.
English-Taught Master's Entry
The scholarship attaches to Bergamo's English-taught Master's programmes, which set their own English requirement. Sri Lankan applicants with an English-medium bachelor's should ask whether an MOI letter is accepted in place of IELTS.
account_tree Application Process
Sit the GRE early
Register for the GRE Revised General Test well before the call's deadline and have your official score sent to Bergamo. This is the step that most often derails Sri Lankan applications.
Apply for admission to an English-taught Master's
Submit your admission application with attested transcripts, degree certificate, passport copy and English evidence. Non-EU applicants also complete pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal.
Submit the scholarship application by the call deadline
Apply against the published call, uploading your GRE score and the self-declaration that you hold no other scholarship.
Ranking, then the Italian study visa
Bergamo publishes a ranking of successful applicants. With your admission and scholarship confirmation, apply for the Italian type-D study visa at the Embassy, with Universitaly pre-enrolment, accommodation proof and financial evidence.
Why the University of Bergamo?
Bergamo is a public university in Lombardy with English-taught Master's in engineering, management, economics and the humanities, less than an hour from Milan but at a fraction of Milan's living costs. Its international scholarship is one of the more substantial cash grants in the Italian public system.

Looking for a scholarship because of the cost?
Then start here instead. Scholarships are competitive, usually partial, and decided by someone else — they are the least reliable way to make studying abroad affordable. Your destination and course choice move the number far more, and both are entirely within your control.
