PhD in Public Health
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Course Overview
The PhD in Public Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School (JHSPH) is the world's #1-ranked public-health programme (US News, QS by Subject) and the oldest school of its kind. The 4-year doctorate is delivered through one of nine departments — applicants choose at admission between Epidemiology, Biostatistics, International Health, Health Policy and Management, Environmental Health and Engineering, Mental Health, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Population/Family/Reproductive Health, and Health, Behavior and Society. The 2026 cohort across all departments will be roughly 100 PhD students. Research happens out of the Wolfe Street campus and partner institutions including the JHU Hospital, the Center for Health Security (CHS), and the Center for Communication Programs which has run public-health communication projects in Sri Lanka since the 1990s.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach JHSPH after an MBBS plus an MPH (Master of Public Health, often from JHSPH itself, Harvard T.H. Chan, or LSHTM), or after a Bachelor's in Biology / Statistics + research output. JHSPH funds nearly all PhD students fully — tuition, stipend (~USD 38,000-42,000), and health insurance — for the full duration. Sri Lankan PHD alumni from JHSPH have shaped Sri Lankan public-health policy: senior epidemiologists at the Ministry of Health, the Epidemiology Unit (the team that ran the COVID-19 response), the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) MD-Community Medicine programme, WHO Sri Lanka Country Office, and academic posts at the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo / Peradeniya / Ruhuna / Sri Jayewardenepura.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan MBBS with strong honours / distinctions, OR a First-class Bachelor's in Biology, Statistics, Public Health, Nutrition, or related discipline plus an MPH equivalent.
- check_circle Research output: at least one peer-reviewed publication, conference poster, or substantial research project; MD-Community Medicine PG training counts strongly.
- check_circle Three strong academic / professional references; one ideally from a Bloomberg School alumnus or current faculty.
- check_circle GRE General is currently NOT REQUIRED at JHSPH (test-optional permanently since 2023 for most departments; // VERIFY Biostatistics still requires it).
- check_circle Statement of Purpose (500-1,000 words) identifying 3-5 faculty whose research aligns; pre-application supervisor contact is highly encouraged.
English Proficiency
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall (min 26 in each section) — JHSPH does not currently accept IELTS for PhD admissions.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's or Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised university — most Sri Lankan applicants with an MBBS or English-medium MPH qualify.
