DPhil in Clinical Medicine
Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Oxford
Course Overview
The DPhil in Clinical Medicine at Oxford sits inside the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine (NDM) — the UK's largest clinical research department and the home of the Oxford Vaccine Group (yes, the team that developed the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine with Sarah Gilbert). The 3-4 year DPhil is research-only with no taught component, organised around laboratory or translational research clusters: infectious diseases, immunology, cardiovascular medicine, genomic medicine, structural biology, and global health. Roughly 80 DPhil students join per intake across NDM, working out of the Old Road Campus Research Building, the Big Data Institute, and the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics.
Sri Lankan applicants reach Oxford Clinical Medicine after a strong MBBS (Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya) plus 1-3 years of clinical practice, or after a UK-based MSc / Master's in a biomedical subject. The route is almost universally fully-funded through the Clarendon Fund, the Rhodes Scholarship (Sri Lanka holds one of the few South Asian allocations each year), Wellcome Trust studentships, or NDM departmental awards. Sri Lankan DPhils return to the National Hospital, Lanka Hospitals, Asiri, or join the Oxford Sri Lanka Collaboration that runs out of the Faculty of Medicine, Ruhuna and the Wellcome Trust / Oxford Clinical Research Unit in Galle.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan MBBS with strong honours / distinctions, OR a First-class Bachelor's in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, or related life sciences (GPA 3.7+).
- check_circle Master's by research (MPhil or MSc by Research) strongly preferred for direct-entry applicants without an MBBS.
- check_circle Pre-approved supervisor match required — applicants must identify a Principal Investigator within NDM and confirm willingness to host the DPhil project before formal application.
- check_circle Research proposal (1,500-2,000 words) aligned with the supervisor's current research focus.
- check_circle Three academic / clinical references; evidence of research output (publications, conference posters, lab placements) is highly valued.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.5 Overall (min 7.0 in each section) — Oxford Higher Level.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 110 Overall (min 22 listening, 24 reading, 25 writing, 25 speaking).
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's / Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution (most Sri Lankan medical-faculty applicants qualify with a Faculty MOI letter).
