PhD in Clinical Medicine
Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University
Course Overview
The PhD in Clinical Medicine at Monash University is delivered through the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences — Australia's largest medical faculty by research income and consistently top-50 globally for Medicine (QS, Shanghai). The 3-4 year doctorate is offered across a dozen research clusters including the Hudson Institute (translational medicine), the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI), the Monash Heart and Diabetes Institute, the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), and the Alfred Hospital research partnership. Monash is the home institution of the original ICU Liberation movement (the ABCDEF Bundle for intensive care delirium prevention) and runs the world's largest clinical-trials network in the southern hemisphere.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach Monash Medicine after an MBBS from Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, or Kelaniya plus 1-3 years of postgraduate clinical training, or after the MD-Research stream at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM). Funding is fully covered for nearly all PhD admits: the Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) provides full tuition + AUD 35,000+ annual stipend for 3.5 years. Sri Lankan returnees from Monash Medicine have routed into consultant-track posts at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Asiri Hospitals, Lanka Hospitals, the PGIM (academic medicine), and the Wellcome Trust / Oxford Clinical Research Unit in Galle. AHPRA registration is required for Australian clinical practice.
