Vienna BioCenter PhD Programme

The Vienna BioCenter PhD Programme is one of continental Europe's strongest molecular life sciences doctorates, run jointly by four institutes on one Vienna campus — the IMP, IMBA, the Gregor Mendel Institute and the Max Perutz Labs. You are not a fee-paying student here: you are employed by the institute your supervisor sits in, on a full contract with a gross salary of EUR 39,000-42,900 a year (2025 rates, roughly LKR 13.5-14.8 million gross), plus health, pension and accident insurance. The degree is awarded jointly by the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. Sri Lankan applicants are eligible on the same terms as anyone else, and the programme actively recruits worldwide. Be realistic about the odds: the programme receives well over 2,000 applications a year and takes roughly 25-30 students per cycle, so this is a low-single-digit acceptance rate. A strong Master's, hands-on wet-lab or computational research experience, and ideally a publication or preprint are what get applications through the first screen. There are two calls a year, with deadlines of 15 April and 15 October, followed by online panel interviews and then research-group interviews. Non-EU citizens are charged a semester fee of EUR 726.72, but VBC PhD students can apply for EU/EEA-equal status using their researcher residence permit, which brings the fee down to the EU rate. German language courses, visa assistance and campus facilities are included.

Two calls each year. Autumn Call: deadline 15 October, interviews late November/early December. Spring Call: deadline 15 April, interviews late May/early June — confirm current dates on training.vbc.ac.at

info How this award actually works

warning

This is a separate, highly competitive application

Awards from external organisations like this one run their own selection round against applicants from across the world, and success rates are usually in the low single digits. Lanka Scholar does not administer it and cannot submit it for you. Treat it as a bonus on top of a funded study plan — never as the plan itself.

account_balance

Who awards it

Vienna BioCenter (IMP, IMBA, GMI & Max Perutz Labs) — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.

how_to_reg

How you are considered

Through a separate application round run by the funder, with its own forms, deadlines and shortlisting. You submit it yourself — it is not part of a university admission application.

payments

What it covers

Fully Funded PhD Position with EUR 39,000-42,900 Gross Salary. Read the terms carefully: even fully-funded awards rarely cover every cost, and any shortfall is yours to fund.

fact_check Eligibility Criteria

public

Open Worldwide

There is no nationality restriction — Sri Lankan applicants apply through the same portal on the same terms. The student body is genuinely international and the working language is English.

school

Master's or Equivalent

You need a Master's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, or to be close to completing one, from a recognised university. Molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, neuroscience, bioinformatics and related disciplines are the core areas.

science

Demonstrable Research Experience

Successful applicants almost always have substantial hands-on lab or computational research beyond coursework — a research-based Master's thesis at minimum, and often a publication, preprint or conference output.

warning

Very Highly Competitive

Over 2,000 applications a year for roughly 25-30 places. Sri Lankan applicants do get selected at institutes like this, but rarely — treat it as a stretch application alongside more probable options, not as your only plan.

account_tree Application Process

1

Prepare your application before the call

  • CV with detailed research experience and techniques
  • Motivation letter naming the groups and research areas you want to join
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Contact details for referees who can speak to your bench or coding work
2

Submit by 15 April or 15 October

Apply through the Vienna BioCenter PhD Programme portal at training.vbc.ac.at during the open call. One application is considered across all four institutes.

3

Online panel interviews

Shortlisted candidates are interviewed online by a panel — late May/early June for the Spring Call, late November/early December for the Autumn Call.

4

Research group interviews and campus visit

Candidates who pass the panel stage interview with individual research groups, with campus visits scheduled individually. A match with a specific supervisor is what converts an interview into an offer.

5

Sort your residence permit and fee status

Once you have an offer, apply for the Austrian researcher residence permit. Use it to request EU/EEA-equal status so you pay the EU semester fee rather than the EUR 726.72 non-EU rate.

Why the Vienna BioCenter?

The VBC is a single campus in Vienna's third district holding four research institutes, a university biology faculty and dozens of biotech companies. For a Sri Lankan life sciences graduate it offers something rare: a fully salaried PhD in a top-tier European research environment, in English, with no tuition burden.
