OeAW DOC Fellowship (Austrian Academy of Sciences)
The DOC fellowship is the Austrian Academy of Sciences' flagship award for doctoral researchers, and it carries no nationality restriction — a Sri Lankan researcher enrolled at an Austrian university competes on the same footing as an Austrian one. You choose a duration of 24, 30 or 36 months, and the fellowship pays a monthly stipend (rates are published each year by the Academy) so you can work on your thesis full time. It runs across all disciplines of basic research, from molecular biology to musicology. The catch, and it is a real one, is sequencing: you must already be enrolled in a doctoral programme at an Austrian university, either before your PhD starts or within the first year of it, and your Master's must have been completed no more than two years before the deadline. From 2026 the Academy also requires a demonstrated research track record — you must meet at least two of three criteria covering publications, international research mobility, and academic engagement such as teaching or conference organisation. That bar means DOC is not a realistic first step for someone applying straight from a Sri Lankan Master's with no publications. It is, however, an excellent target if you can first secure a PhD place in Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck or Linz and then apply in your first year. Competition is heavy and the fellowship covers your own stipend only — not tuition contributions, research costs, or your family's living expenses.
The 2026 round closed on 15 September 2026 (submission window opened 17 August 2026). The call runs annually with a mid-September deadline, so expect the 2027 round to follow the same pattern — confirm on oeaw.ac.at before planning around it.

info How this award actually works
This is a separate, highly competitive application
Awards from external organisations like this one run their own selection round against applicants from across the world, and success rates are usually in the low single digits. Lanka Scholar does not administer it and cannot submit it for you. Treat it as a bonus on top of a funded study plan — never as the plan itself.
Who awards it
Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Austrian Academy of Sciences) — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.
How you are considered
Through a separate application round run by the funder, with its own forms, deadlines and shortlisting. You submit it yourself — it is not part of a university admission application.
What it covers
Fully Funded Doctoral Fellowship (24/30/36 months). Read the terms carefully: even fully-funded awards rarely cover every cost, and any shortfall is yours to fund.
Where we come in
We help you judge whether this award is worth your time, and build a realistic admission plan that works whether or not you win it.
fact_check Eligibility Criteria
No Nationality Restriction
The Academy does not restrict DOC by citizenship. What it requires is that you are doing your doctorate at a university in Austria — so Sri Lankan nationals are eligible once they hold an Austrian PhD place.
Enrolled or About to Enrol
You may apply before your doctoral studies begin, or within the first year after enrolment (counted from 1 July of the submission year). Your Master's certificate must be completed and submitted with the application, and awarded no more than two years before the deadline.
Research Track Record (from 2026)
You must meet at least two of three criteria: (1) a published or accepted academic output — article, paper, conference presentation, poster or preprint; (2) research abroad — research stays, international projects, active conference participation or study abroad; (3) academic engagement — contributing to research projects, teaching, organising events or science communication.
Supervisor Recommendation
A line manager or supervisor must submit a positive recommendation confirming you are capable of carrying out the proposed project. Identify and win over that supervisor months before the deadline.
account_tree Application Process
Get a PhD place in Austria first
Apply to doctoral programmes at Austrian universities — Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, TU Wien and TU Graz all admit international doctoral candidates. DOC is a top-up on that place, not a route into it.
Build the two-of-three track record
- Publish or present something before you apply — a conference paper or preprint counts
- Log any international research stay, collaboration or conference participation
- Document teaching, project work, event organisation or science outreach
Prepare and submit the application
Applications go through the Academy's online fellowship portal (stipendien.oeaw.ac.at) during the mid-August to 15 September window. You submit the project description, CV, Master's certificate and your supervisor's recommendation.
Wait for the review outcome
Applications go through international peer review. Success rates are low across all OeAW fellowship programmes, so have a plan B — an employed PhD position at your Austrian institute is often the more reliable route.
Why the Austrian Academy of Sciences?
The OeAW is Austria's largest non-university research institution and its DOC programme is the country's best-known open-discipline doctoral fellowship. Holding a DOC is a strong signal on an academic CV anywhere in Europe, and it buys you the thing PhD students most lack: uninterrupted time on your own project.

Looking for a scholarship because of the cost?
Then start here instead. Scholarships are competitive, usually partial, and decided by someone else — they are the least reliable way to make studying abroad affordable. Your destination and course choice move the number far more, and both are entirely within your control.
