Sweden Rolling — individual doctoral positions are advertised year-round on the KTH vacancies page

KTH Doctoral Studentship (Doktorandanställning)

Sweden does not sell PhD places — it hires PhD students. A doctoral position at KTH is a fixed-term employment contract (doktorandanställning) under Swedish labour law, with a collectively-agreed salary ladder that starts around SEK 34,000 a month gross and rises at defined milestones, plus pension contributions, paid holiday, parental leave and unemployment protection. Tuition is not charged to doctoral students in Sweden regardless of nationality, so the entire cost question disappears. KTH is Sweden's largest and highest-ranked technical university and accounts for roughly a third of the country's engineering research capacity, with strengths in energy systems, materials, ICT, robotics, life science technology and sustainable urban development. For Sri Lankan engineering Master's graduates, this is one of the most direct routes to a salaried European research career.

Master's Degree (240 ECTS Total)

Apply to a Specific Advertised Position

There is no general doctoral admission round. Each position is a job vacancy tied to a funded project and a named supervisor, advertised individually. Read the project description carefully — applications are assessed against it, not against general merit.

public

All Nationalities Eligible

Swedish doctoral positions carry no nationality or residence restriction and no tuition liability. Non-EU appointees apply for a Swedish residence permit for doctoral studies, which allows family accompaniment with full work rights for a spouse.

translate

English Working Language

Research, supervision and the thesis are in English. Swedish is not required at any stage, though KTH offers free courses and it helps socially. IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, or an English-medium prior degree, is normally requested.

account_tree Application Process

1

Monitor the KTH vacancies page

Doctoral positions are posted continuously under 'Work at KTH'. Set up alerts by school (Engineering Sciences, EECS, ITM, CBH, ABE) and check weekly — application windows are often only three to four weeks.

2

Tailor the application to the project

  • CV with publications, thesis title and any industrial research experience
  • Cover letter addressing the specific research questions in the advertisement
  • Degree certificates and transcripts, plus a translated grading explanation
  • Two references who can speak to your research ability
3

Interview with the supervisor and group

Shortlisted candidates interview with the prospective supervisor and often the research group, normally online. Expect to present your Master's thesis and discuss how you would approach the advertised project.

4

Offer and employment contract

A successful outcome is a job offer with a stated salary and start date, not an admission letter. The employment contract is what you use for the Swedish residence permit application.

5

Residence permit and relocation

Apply to the Swedish Migration Agency for a residence permit for doctoral studies. Processing from Sri Lanka typically takes two to four months, so factor that into the start date you negotiate.
