HU Talent Scholarship
Most Dutch scholarships are first-year-only, which leaves international students facing the full institutional fee in years two, three and four with nothing to soften it. The HU Talent Scholarship is the rarer kind: a EUR 3,000 award — around LKR 1 million — for students already studying at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht who are moving into their second or a later year. That makes it a genuine planning tool rather than a one-off sweetener. The condition that decides it is academic progress: you need at least 50 of the 60 ECTS credits from your previous year, exemptions not counted. When more students apply than there are awards, HU ranks on grades and credits earned, so it rewards students who did not coast through first year. For Sri Lankan students, this matters most as part of a multi-year budget: if you are weighing an HU bachelor's against a cheaper destination, factor in that a solid first year can reduce the cost of each subsequent year, provided you apply by the 1 September deadline. It cannot be combined with other grants, so check what else you hold before you apply.

info How this award actually works
Who awards it
HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.
How you are considered
Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.
What it covers
EUR 3,000 Continuation Award for Second Year and Beyond. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.
Where we come in
We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.
fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Non-EU/EEA Fee-Paying Student
You must hold a non-EU/EEA nationality and pay the higher institutional tuition fee at HU. Sri Lankan students on a Dutch student residence permit fall into this category.
Already Enrolled and Progressing
The award is for students starting their second or a higher year at HU. It is not an entry scholarship — you apply after you have a year of Dutch results behind you.
At Least 50 of 60 Credits
You need a minimum of 50 ECTS from the previous academic year, excluding exemptions. Falling below that threshold disqualifies the application regardless of your grades.
Competitive When Oversubscribed
If applications exceed the number of awards, HU ranks candidates on grade average and credits earned. Treat first year as the qualifying round.
Cannot Be Combined With Other Grants
The Talent Scholarship cannot be held alongside other HU grants or scholarships. If you received the NL Scholarship in year one, check with HU how the two interact before you count on both.
account_tree Application Process
Complete a full academic year at HU
Earn at least 50 of the 60 ECTS available in your year, exemptions excluded, and keep your grade average as high as you can — both are used to rank applicants.
Apply by 1 September
Submit the HU Talent Scholarship application before the 1 September deadline for the year you are entering.
Ranking and award
HU assesses eligible applicants and, where oversubscribed, ranks on credits and grades. Successful applicants receive EUR 3,000 towards that year's tuition.
Keep your residence permit in order
Dutch student permits require you to maintain the credit progress standard (the BRIN/nominal progress rule) anyway. The 50-credit scholarship threshold sits comfortably above it, so meeting one supports the other.
Why HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht?
HU teaches applied bachelor's degrees in business, IT, media, communication and life sciences, with internships built into the structure. The Talent Scholarship is unusual in the Dutch system because it funds the later years of a degree, which is exactly where international students normally run out of support.

Looking for a scholarship because of the cost?
Then start here instead. Scholarships are competitive, usually partial, and decided by someone else — they are the least reliable way to make studying abroad affordable. Your destination and course choice move the number far more, and both are entirely within your control.
