Course Overview

Italian doctorates are funded positions, not fee-paying degrees, and that is the headline for Sri Lankan applicants. Successful candidates on the Bologna PhD in Visual, Performing and Media Arts (Arti Visive, Performative, Mediali) receive a borsa di studio worth roughly €16,250 gross a year for three years, plus a research and mobility budget of around 50% of the annual stipend for fieldwork, archives and conferences, and pay no tuition beyond a small regional tax. Places are awarded through a competitive annual national call with a published ranking.

The doctoral school covers film and media studies, theatre and performance studies, art history and visual culture, music and sound studies, and the digital and curatorial practices that cut across them. Bologna is Europe's oldest university (1088) and the department is embedded in the Cineteca di Bologna — one of the world's major film archives and restoration labs, host of Il Cinema Ritrovato — which makes archival film, restoration history and moving-image heritage particularly strong tracks here. Teaching and supervision are available in English.

Career Outcomes & PR

Bologna doctorates in this area move into academic posts across Italy and Europe, film-archive and restoration roles (the Cineteca pipeline is real), curatorial and programming positions at museums, biennales and festivals, and research roles on EU Horizon and Creative Europe cultural projects. Italy's post-doc job-search permit and the EU Blue Card route apply. For Sri Lankan candidates the funded structure is decisive — it makes a European doctorate in the arts achievable without family capital — and returnees are well placed for faculty roles in visual arts, media and performing arts at Colombo, Kelaniya, Jaffna, the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, and for programming and archive work with the Sri Lanka Film Corporation, the National Film Archive and the festival circuit.
