PhD in Korean Studies
Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU)
Deadline detail: Around late April for the September intake and late September for March — SKKU runs two annual international admission rounds
Course Overview
Sungkyunkwan University traces its founding to 1398, which makes it the oldest institution of higher learning in East Asia — it was the Joseon dynasty's royal Confucian academy, and the original Munmyo shrine and lecture halls still stand on the Humanities and Social Sciences campus in central Seoul. That is not decoration. Doctoral work in Korean Studies at SKKU is hosted across the Academy of East Asian Studies, the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy, and the departments of Korean Language and Literature, History and Philosophy, and the university's institutional depth in Confucian thought, Joseon intellectual history and classical Korean textual scholarship is unmatched. Contemporary tracks cover modern Korean history, Korean literature and translation, and the transnational study of Korean popular culture — the Hallyu research that has made Korean Studies a growth field globally.
For a Sri Lankan applicant the funding picture is unusually favourable. Korean humanities tuition at SKKU runs around KRW 5.3 million a semester, and SKKU's own International Student Scholarship routinely covers 30 to 100 percent of that on academic merit. Above it sits the Global Korea Scholarship, the Korean government's flagship award, which covers full tuition, a monthly living allowance of about KRW 1 million, airfare, medical insurance and a preceding year of intensive Korean language training — Sri Lanka has an annual embassy-track quota and Sri Lankan candidates do win it. The Korea Foundation and the Academy of Korean Studies both fund overseas Korean Studies doctoral candidates specifically, which is a funding stream that simply does not exist for most humanities disciplines.
The honest constraint is Korean. This is a discipline whose primary sources are in modern Korean, classical Chinese and hanja, and SKKU's Korean Studies supervision runs substantially in Korean. Some seminars and the university's international graduate offerings are in English, and SKKU is one of Korea's most English-friendly universities overall, but a serious Korean Studies doctorate without TOPIK Level 4 to 5 and a working reading knowledge of hanja is not realistic. Applicants who go through the GKS route get a full year of funded language study before the degree begins, which is precisely why we steer Sri Lankan candidates toward it. Plan a four-year commitment: one year of language, three of doctorate.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A completed master's degree in Korean Studies, East Asian Studies, history, literature, philosophy, anthropology or a cognate humanities discipline.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with an MA or MPhil from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya or Sri Jayewardenepura — particularly in history, languages or cultural studies — are the typical profile; prior Korean language study is a significant differentiator.
- check_circle A research proposal engaging Korean primary sources, plus a master's thesis or writing sample demonstrating archival or textual research capacity.
- check_circle Two academic references and a statement identifying a prospective supervisor within the relevant SKKU department or the Academy of East Asian Studies.
- check_circle Apostilled or consular-authenticated degree certificates and transcripts — Korean universities are strict about document authentication, so start this with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo well in advance.
- check_circle Shortlisted applicants sit an interview, normally conducted online for overseas candidates.
English Proficiency
- check_circle TOPIK Level 4 minimum, Level 5 realistically, for Korean Studies supervision — most primary source material is in Korean, and classical texts require hanja reading ability.
- check_circle IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 88 for English-taught seminars and for applicants pursuing an English-language track.
- check_circle Waived if your prior degree was taught and examined entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium university programmes qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter to SKKU.
- check_circle The Global Korea Scholarship includes a fully funded year of intensive Korean language training before the degree begins, which is the practical route to the required TOPIK level.

Career Outcomes & PR
Korean Studies doctorates are in genuine demand as Korean Studies programmes expand across South and Southeast Asia, Europe and North America — SKKU graduates take faculty posts, positions at the Academy of Korean Studies and the Korea Foundation, curatorial and archival roles at the National Museum of Korea and the National Institute of Korean History, and translation and cultural-diplomacy work at the Korean Cultural Centres. Korea's D-10 job-seeking visa gives graduates up to six months, extendable toward two years, and the points-based F-2-7 residence visa scores a Korean doctorate very highly, with an onward path to F-5 permanent residence. Sri Lankan returnees are strong candidates for the Korean Studies and East Asian Studies posts now being created at Kelaniya and Colombo, for the Korean Cultural Centre in Colombo, for translation and interpretation work supporting the large Sri Lankan labour corridor to Korea under the EPS scheme, and for diplomatic and trade roles at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
