PhD in Humanities (History, Literature and Philosophy)
Université Paris Cité
Deadline detail: Doctoral contract competitions run roughly April to June; registration by late autumn once a supervisor and doctoral school accept you
Course Overview
Université Paris Cité was formed from the merger of Paris Descartes, Paris Diderot and the Institut de Physique du Globe, and its humanities doctorates run through the doctoral schools — principally ED 131 (Language, Literature, Image: Civilisations and Human Sciences), ED 622 (Sciences of Societies) and ED 623 (Knowledge, Science, Education). A doctorate here is a three-year supervised thesis with a public soutenance before a jury, structured around the research laboratory (laboratoire) your supervisor belongs to rather than around coursework. Paris Cité's humanities strengths include comparative and postcolonial literature, cultural and intellectual history, history of science and medicine, film and visual culture, and philosophy of science — and the city's archival infrastructure, from the Bibliothèque nationale de France to the Archives nationales and the Institut national d'histoire de l'art, is a research resource no other European capital matches.
The economics are the part Sri Lankan applicants most often misunderstand. France does not charge differentiated non-EU tuition at doctoral level: registration is the national doctoral fee of about €391 a year plus the €105 CVEC student-life contribution, and that is the whole bill. But French doctorates are normally conceived as employment, not as fee-paying study. The contrat doctoral is a three-year fixed-term public-service employment contract paying roughly €2,200 a month gross, with full social security and pension contributions, and it is awarded by competition within each doctoral school. Humanities schools have markedly fewer contracts than the sciences, and competition is severe. Candidates who do not win a contract either self-fund, hold a foreign scholarship, or work — and self-funding three years in Paris is not a small undertaking.
Language is the decisive practical question. Theses at Paris Cité may be written in English with authorisation, and some laboratories are genuinely bilingual, but most humanities supervision, seminar life, jury deliberation and — crucially — archival work runs in French. We advise Sri Lankan applicants targeting a French humanities doctorate to reach B2 French before applying and to plan on C1 during the thesis. Alliance Française de Colombo is the usual route. Applicants who take that seriously find France one of the cheapest and most intellectually rewarding doctoral destinations in Europe; those who assume English will carry them struggle.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A French master's or a recognised equivalent — a Sri Lankan MA, MPhil or research master's in history, literature, philosophy, languages or a cognate humanities discipline, with strong results.
- check_circle A supervisor (directeur de thèse) authorised to supervise (HDR) must formally agree to direct the thesis before the doctoral school will consider your file.
- check_circle A research proposal in French or English setting out the corpus, the historiographical or theoretical problem, the method, and a three-year timetable.
- check_circle Admission is by the doctoral school's selection committee; funded places are awarded through a competitive concours with an interview, usually held between April and June.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with an MA or MPhil from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya or Sri Jayewardenepura, or an overseas humanities master's, are the typical profile — a strong master's dissertation and any published work carry the most weight.
- check_circle Certified translations of transcripts and, where requested, a CIMEA-style statement of comparability or an attestation from Campus France Sri Lanka.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall or TOEFL iBT 90 where the thesis and supervision will be conducted in English.
- check_circle French B2 (DELF B2) is the practical minimum for humanities supervision, seminars and archival research; C1 (DALF C1) is expected for most doctoral schools and for a French-language thesis.
- check_circle Waived if your master's was taught and examined entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium programmes qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter.
- check_circle Alliance Française de Colombo runs the DELF and DALF examinations; start French at least 18 months before you intend to apply.

Career Outcomes & PR
A Paris Cité humanities doctorate is a research credential first — its natural destinations are academic posts (maître de conférences competitions in France, and faculty positions across Europe, North America and Asia), CNRS and other national research bodies, museums and heritage institutions, publishing, and cultural policy at UNESCO and the EU institutions. France grants master's and doctorate graduates a 12-month APS residence permit to look for work or start a business, and the Passeport Talent – Chercheur permit covers researchers on institutional contracts, with a route to the 10-year resident card. Sri Lankan returnees move into senior academic posts in the humanities faculties at Colombo, Peradeniya and Kelaniya, into the Department of National Archives and the Central Cultural Fund, and into policy and research roles at UNESCO's Colombo office and the Institute of Policy Studies.
