PhD in Materials Science and Engineering
School of Materials Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore)
Course Overview
NTU's PhD in Materials Science and Engineering is delivered through the School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) — Singapore's largest materials research school and consistently ranked top-5 globally for Materials Science (QS by Subject). The 4-year doctorate is supervisor-led across six research clusters: Functional Materials, Nanomaterials, Polymers and Soft Materials, Materials for Energy, Materials for Health, and Structural Materials. NTU MSE collaborates closely with A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), and the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI). The school produces consistently high-impact papers in Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, and the ACS journals.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach NTU MSE after a strong Bachelor's from UoM Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Physics, or from the University of Peradeniya, often with industry research time at the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), the Ceylon Institute of Builders, or local manufacturing R&D arms (Brandix Materials R&D, Hayleys). Funding is fully covered: the NTU Research Scholarship covers full tuition + SGD 2,200/month stipend (rising to SGD 2,700/month after Qualifying Exam) + medical insurance for 4 years. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior R&D positions at Brandix (technical textiles), MAS Holdings (advanced apparel materials), Hayleys (rubber and elastomer R&D), Ceylon Institute of Builders, and into faculty posts at UoM, University of Peradeniya, and the Industrial Technology Institute.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle First-class Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related — GPA 3.7+ / First Class equivalent.
- check_circle Master's by Research (preferred) — direct-from-Bachelor's possible with exceptional research output.
- check_circle Pre-approved supervisor match required — applicants should identify and contact prospective MSE faculty before applying.
- check_circle Strong research output: publications, conference papers, or substantial undergraduate research project work is highly valued.
- check_circle GRE General is currently NOT REQUIRED at NTU MSE but is sometimes requested for borderline admits.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's or Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution — most Sri Lankan engineering applicants qualify.
