Course Overview

The PhD in Biomedical Engineering at MIT is delivered through the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology (HST) programme — a joint enterprise between MIT's School of Engineering and Harvard Medical School that's been training physician-scientists and bio-engineers since 1970. The 5-6 year doctorate (counting integrated rotations) combines MIT-style engineering rigour with Harvard Medical School clinical exposure: students spend the first two years rotating across labs at the Broad Institute, Wyss Institute, Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, and Massachusetts General Hospital. Cohort size is roughly 30 students per intake across the Medical Engineering and Medical Physics (MEMP) and Bioastronautics tracks.

Sri Lankan applicants reach MIT HST after an exceptional MBBS or BSc Biomedical Engineering / Bioengineering, usually with research output (Pulse-Surveys at UoM Department of Electronic and Telecom Engineering, NTU Singapore, or a US undergrad). Funding is automatic and complete: MIT covers full tuition + USD 50,000+ annual stipend + health insurance for the full PhD duration. Sri Lankan HST grads have routed into research roles at the Broad Institute, Moderna, Genentech, and biotech founder paths in Boston — and a small but growing number return to Asiri Group or Lanka Hospitals' R&D arms, or to the Faculty of Medicine at Colombo and UoM Biomedical Engineering.

Career Outcomes & PR

F-1 to OPT (3-year STEM OPT extension) gives PhDs 3 years of US work authorisation after graduation. MIT HST PhDs route into research scientist roles at Moderna, Genentech, Verily, Google Health, the Broad Institute, and into founding biotech startups (Flagship Pioneering portfolio is a common path) at USD 130,000-180,000 starting (LKR 41M-58M/yr), or into academic positions at MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Imperial College London. Sri Lankan returnees with HST credentials have taken senior R&D roles at Asiri Group, Lanka Hospitals, and joined faculty at UoM Biomedical Engineering, the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), and the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo.
