Course Overview
KAIST's PhD in Electrical Engineering is delivered through the School of Electrical Engineering — Korea's top-ranked EE department and consistently ranked top-25 globally (QS by Subject, US News). Founded in 1971 as Korea's flagship technical institute, KAIST is to South Korea what MIT is to the US: state-funded, English-language-friendly, and the primary feeder into Samsung Electronics, LG, SK Hynix, and Hyundai's senior R&D ranks. The 4-year doctorate is supervisor-led across research clusters: Wireless Communications and Networks, Semiconductors and VLSI, Signal Processing and ML, Computer Architecture, Photonics and Quantum Electronics, Robotics and Mechatronics, and Power Electronics. The school operates the world's largest 5G/6G testbed alongside Samsung and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach KAIST EE after a UoM Department of Electronic and Telecom Engineering or Electrical Engineering Bachelor's, often with industry experience at Dialog Axiata, MillenniumIT (LSEG Tech), or via a Master's at a Korean partner university. Funding is fully covered: the KAIST Graduate Scholarship covers full tuition + KRW 1.6 million/month stipend (roughly LKR 368,000/month) + medical insurance for the full PhD. The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) administered by NIIED is the other major funding pathway. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior R&D roles at Samsung Sri Lanka R&D Centre (Colombo), LG Electronics regional offices, Dialog Axiata 5G engineering, LSEG Tech, and faculty positions at UoM ENTC and SLIIT.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle First-class Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, or related — GPA 3.7+ / First Class equivalent.
- check_circle Master's degree (preferred) — KAIST also admits direct-from-Bachelor's into an integrated MS-PhD pathway.
- check_circle Pre-approved supervisor match required — applicants must identify and contact prospective KAIST faculty before applying.
- check_circle Strong research output: publications in IEEE Transactions / IEEE conferences, or substantial undergraduate research project work, is highly valued.
- check_circle Two academic references; KAIST conducts a remote interview with the prospective supervisor as part of admissions.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 5.5).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 83 Overall.
- check_circle TOEIC 720+ is also accepted.
- check_circle Korean language proficiency is NOT REQUIRED — KAIST EE classes are taught in English (one of KAIST's deliberate competitive positions in Asia).

KAIST EE PhDs are heavily recruited by Samsung Electronics (Suwon HQ — Samsung directly recruits ~30% of each KAIST EE PhD cohort), LG Electronics, SK Hynix, Hyundai Motor advanced R&D, Naver, Kakao, and into research scientist roles at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) — KRW 80,000,000-120,000,000 starting (LKR 18M-28M/yr) plus large signing bonuses for top admits. PhDs qualify for the D-10 Job Seeker Visa (6 months extendable) and pathway to the F-2-7 Long-Term Skilled Worker Visa. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering positions at Samsung Sri Lanka R&D Centre (Colombo, focused on 5G/6G algorithms), Dialog Axiata, LSEG Tech, and faculty posts at UoM ENTC, KDU Engineering, and SLIIT.
