PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering
Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Toronto
Course Overview
The PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Toronto is delivered through the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department — the largest engineering department in Canada and consistently ranked top-3 in Canada and top-25 globally for ECE (QS, US News). The 4-year doctorate is supervisor-led, organised around eight research clusters: Communications, Computer Engineering, Electromagnetics, Electronics, Energy Systems, Photonics, Software Engineering, and Systems Control. UofT ECE hosts Vector Institute affiliates, the Centre for Quantum Information and Quantum Control (CQIQC), and the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Distinguished Lectureship — incoming PhD students join one of ~250 active research groups across these clusters.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach UofT ECE after a strong UoM Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Computer Science & Engineering Bachelor's, often via a UofT MASc or research-based Master's first. Canada's funding is fully covered: UofT's standard PhD package is CAD 40,000+ per year (tuition + stipend + benefits) for the full 4 years, often supplemented by NSERC, Vanier, or Connaught International awards. Sri Lankan returnees with UofT ECE PhDs have routed into senior R&D roles at WSO2, MillenniumIT, Dialog Axiata, LSEG Tech Colombo, and into faculty positions at UoM, the University of Peradeniya Faculty of Engineering, and SLIIT.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle First-class Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in ECE, Computer Science, Engineering Physics, or related — GPA 3.7+ / First Class equivalent.
- check_circle Research-based Master's (MASc, MPhil, or MSc by Research) — strongly preferred for direct PhD entry; UofT also admits direct-from-Bachelor's into a combined MASc + PhD pathway.
- check_circle Pre-approved supervisor match — applicants must identify and secure a faculty advisor before formal admission is confirmed.
- check_circle Research proposal (2-5 pages) aligned with the supervisor's current focus.
- check_circle Three academic references; evidence of publications, patents, or substantial open-source contributions is highly valued.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (min 6.5 in each section).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 93 Overall (min 22 in Writing, 22 in Speaking).
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's or Master's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised university for at least 2 years — most Sri Lankan applicants from UoM, UoP, or English-medium private institutions qualify.

Career Outcomes & PR
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to 3 years gives PhD graduates strong Canadian labour-market access and a direct pathway to PR through Express Entry (PhD applicants score very highly on the CRS). UofT ECE PhDs route into senior R&D roles at Google Canada, Meta Canada, NVIDIA Toronto, Microsoft Research Montreal, Huawei Canada, and into Toronto's growing startup ecosystem (Cohere, Geoffrey Hinton's spin-outs) at CAD 130,000-180,000 starting (LKR 30M-42M/yr), or into faculty roles at UofT itself, McGill, UBC, Waterloo, and US R1 universities. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior tech leadership at WSO2, MillenniumIT (now LSEG Tech), Virtusa, Dialog Axiata, Sysco LABS, and into Engineers Sri Lanka (EngSL) Chartered Engineer pathways.
