MSc in Software Systems Engineering
RWTH Aachen University
Course Overview
RWTH Aachen is one of Germany's elite Universities of Excellence and its largest technical university, with computer science and engineering consistently ranked among the best in continental Europe. The English-taught MSc in Software Systems Engineering trains computer-science graduates to design, build, and reason about large, reliable software systems — covering software architecture, formal methods, distributed and embedded systems, data and machine learning, and software engineering processes.
The two-year master's is research-led and tied to RWTH's strong industry ecosystem. Aachen sits in Germany's engineering heartland, on the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, and the university partners closely with firms in automotive, automation, telecoms, and software. Students take a research-oriented elective profile and complete a substantial master's thesis, often with an industry or institute partner.
For Sri Lankan IT graduates, Germany is one of the strongest value destinations in the world: as a public university in North Rhine-Westphalia, RWTH charges no tuition — only a semester contribution of a few hundred euros that also covers public transport. Germany offers an 18-month post-study job-search visa, the EU's largest tech economy is on the doorstep, and a path to the EU Blue Card and long-term residence is well established.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A bachelor's degree in computer science or a very closely related field, with strong results.
- check_circle A solid foundation in programming, algorithms, theoretical computer science, and mathematics — RWTH assesses the content of your bachelor's against its own curriculum.
- check_circle Admission may carry conditions (additional credits) where your background differs from the expected CS core.
- check_circle CV, transcripts, module descriptions, and a letter of motivation.
- check_circle Some applicants are asked to verify their degree through the uni-assist / VPD pre-check used for international qualifications.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall is the typical requirement for English-taught master's admission.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency is accepted.
- check_circle Waiver path: the English certificate is waived where your bachelor's degree was taught entirely in English — most Sri Lankan English-medium CS graduates qualify with a medium-of-instruction (MOI) letter.
- check_circle German is not required for the English-taught programme, though basic German supports daily life and working-student roles.
