MSc in Data Science
Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU)
Course Overview
LMU Munich's MSc in Data Science is a research-intensive English-taught master's at one of Germany's two top-ranked universities (LMU and TU Munich consistently lead German rankings; both are members of the German Universities Excellence Initiative). LMU's Department of Statistics has a strong methodological tradition — the programme leans into statistics, machine learning, computational methods, and applied data analysis across health, business, and the natural sciences.
Sri Lankan applicants from statistics, computer science, maths, or quantitative-economics backgrounds use it as a route into European data science roles. The curriculum is split across four semesters: core statistics + ML + computing in semester 1; specialisation electives in semesters 2-3 (deep learning, Bayesian inference, NLP, computational econometrics, biostatistics); and a research thesis in semester 4. Munich's tech and pharma corridor (BMW, Allianz, Siemens, Roche, Boehringer Ingelheim, Google Munich, Microsoft Munich, Celonis, Personio) hires LMU data scientists heavily.
