MSc Robotics, Systems and Control
Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, ETH Zurich
Course Overview
ETH Zurich's MSc in Robotics, Systems and Control is delivered jointly by the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) and the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) — ETH is consistently ranked top-10 globally for Engineering and #1 in continental Europe (QS, Shanghai). The 2-year MSc covers dynamics and modelling, machine learning for robotics, perception and computer vision, control theory, mechatronics, manipulation and motion planning, multi-robot systems, and surgical/medical robotics. ETH's Autonomous Systems Lab, the Robotics Systems Lab (legged robots, including ANYmal), and the Multi-Scale Robotics Lab are world-class. ETH spinouts in robotics include ANYbotics, Verity (drone-based inventory), Sevensense, and Wingtra — many graduates join these or are directly recruited by Boston Dynamics, NVIDIA Robotics, and SpaceX.
Sri Lankan applicants choose ETH Zurich because Swiss public university tuition is exceptionally low (CHF 1,440 per year — roughly LKR 533,000/year, less than 5% of UK/US equivalents), and ETH brand-equity is at the level of MIT and Stanford in technical hiring circles. Living costs in Zurich are high (CHF 24,000+/year) but Swiss part-time work allowances for students plus Master's research-assistant positions usually cover them. Switzerland's post-study work visa gives 6 months for job search; the conversion to a B permit on Master's-graduate employment is straightforward. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior robotics / control engineering roles at WSO2 (industrial automation R&D), MillenniumIT (LSEG Tech), Mitra Innovation, IFS, the Sri Lanka Telecom R&D, and into faculty positions at UoM Department of Electronic and Telecom Engineering and SLIIT.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or related — minimum GPA 3.5 / Upper Second-Class. ETH's admission bar is notably stricter than UK / Dutch peers.
- check_circle Strong mathematics: linear algebra, multivariable calculus, differential equations, probability, and ideally control theory or signal processing at Bachelor's level.
- check_circle Two academic references; CV; motivation letter (1,000 words) articulating robotics research interests.
- check_circle Bachelor's project / thesis showing genuine engineering depth is required; ETH does NOT have a GRE requirement but reviews academic transcripts very strictly.
- check_circle Some non-cognate applicants may be admitted with an additional 30-60 ECTS of bridging coursework.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (no band below 6.5).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall (min 25 in Writing, 25 in Speaking).
- check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced grade C.
- check_circle German language is NOT REQUIRED — ETH MSc programmes are taught 100% in English.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution for at least 3 years.

Career Outcomes & PR
Eligible for the 6-month Swiss job-search visa on graduation, with conversion to a B Permit on Master's-graduate employment (a clear pathway to long-term residence). ETH Zurich Robotics MSc grads are recruited by Boston Dynamics, NVIDIA Robotics, SpaceX, Tesla, Apple Special Projects, ANYbotics (ETH spinout), Verity, Sevensense, Disney Research, ABB Robotics (Switzerland HQ), Siemens, Schindler, KUKA, and into ETH PhDs and EPFL postdoc tracks — CHF 90,000-140,000 starting (LKR 33M-52M/yr; Swiss salaries are among the world's highest). Sri Lankan returnees route into senior robotics / automation roles at WSO2, IFS R&D, MillenniumIT (LSEG Tech), Sri Lanka Telecom Research, Mitra Innovation, into Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) status via EngSL, and into faculty positions at UoM ENTC, KDU Faculty of Engineering, and SLIIT.
