MSc Molecular Medicine
University of Padua
Course Overview
The University of Padua — where Galileo taught and home to the world's first permanent anatomical theatre — runs a two-year, fully English-taught MSc in Molecular Medicine through its renowned medical school. The programme trains scientists in the molecular basis of disease: genomics, cancer biology, signal transduction, immunology, and the translation of molecular findings into diagnostics and targeted therapies. It is research-led and lab-heavy, with rotations across Padua's University Hospital and a major experimental thesis embedded in an active group. Italy's income-assessed (ISEE) tuition means most Sri Lankan families pay near the lowest band.
Sri Lankan applicants with a BSc in Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, MBBS, or Pharmacy are well-placed, and English-medium Sri Lankan degrees can waive the IELTS requirement via an MOI letter. Padua sits in the prosperous Veneto region, close to Venice, with a strong biotech and pharma ecosystem nearby. Italy grants graduates a 12-month post-study residence permit to seek work, and a funded PhD in molecular medicine is a natural next step for strong performers.

Career Outcomes & PR
Italy grants graduates a 12-month post-study residence permit, with the EU Blue Card to follow. Padua Molecular Medicine alumni proceed to funded PhD positions across the Veneto research cluster and into R&D at Fidia Farmaceutici, Chiesi, Menarini, Roche Italy, and diagnostics firms such as DiaSorin (headquartered nearby). Regulatory- and medical-affairs roles are common. Sri Lankan returnees take research and lecturing positions at the medical and science faculties of Colombo, Peradeniya, and Kelaniya, the Medical Research Institute, and QA/QC roles in the local pharmaceutical and diagnostics sector.
