MSc Medical Biotechnology
University of Bologna
Course Overview
The University of Bologna — founded in 1088, the oldest university in the Western world — runs a two-year, fully English-taught MSc in Medical Biotechnology through its School of Medicine. The programme bridges molecular biology and clinical application: gene and cell therapy, immunotherapy, regenerative medicine, molecular diagnostics, and the bioethics and regulation of biotech products. It is laboratory-intensive, with placements in Bologna's hospital and research labs and a substantial experimental thesis. Italy's tuition is income-assessed (ISEE), so most Sri Lankan families pay near the minimum band — a fraction of UK or US biotech-master's fees.
Sri Lankan applicants with a BSc in Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, MBBS, or Pharmacy fit well, and the wider Emilia-Romagna region is one of Europe's densest life-sciences clusters. English-medium Sri Lankan degrees can waive the IELTS requirement via an MOI letter. Italy grants graduates a 12-month post-study residence permit to seek work, and the EU Blue Card pathway follows — opening careers in pharma, diagnostics, and biotech across Italy and the EU.

Career Outcomes & PR
Italy grants graduates a 12-month post-study residence permit, with the EU Blue Card to follow. Bologna Medical Biotechnology alumni move into R&D and quality roles at IRBM, Menarini, Chiesi, Bracco, and Roche Italy, into diagnostics at bioMérieux and Qiagen, and into funded PhD positions across the Emilia-Romagna life-sciences cluster. Regulatory-affairs and medical-affairs roles are common. Sri Lankan returnees take research and lecturing posts at the biotechnology and biochemistry departments of Colombo, Peradeniya, and Sri Jayewardenepura, plus QC/QA roles at SPMC, State Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and diagnostic labs.
