Course Overview
Radboud University Nijmegen's MSc Medical Biology is delivered through the Faculty of Science in close collaboration with Radboudumc — one of Europe's leading academic medical centers, top-100 globally for Medicine (THE / QS by subject). The two-year programme is taught 100% in English and is research-intensive — students spend ~70% of programme time on two extended research internships (typically 6 months each) within Radboudumc research groups or external partner labs (Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour; the Hubrecht Institute; or the major Dutch biomedical industry partners).
Specialisation tracks include Human Pathobiology, Communication Disorders / Brain Sciences, Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, and Adaptive Organisms. Radboudumc is particularly strong in infectious disease and parasitology (with research focus areas highly relevant to Sri Lankan medical graduates — malaria, dengue, leptospirosis, tropical infections), as well as oncology, neuroscience, and reproductive medicine. Sri Lankan medical graduates from UoC, UoP, USJP, Kelaniya and Rajarata medical faculties, plus biomedical bachelors from UoM and SLIIT, are well represented. The thesis-research model means many graduates progress directly into Radboud PhD positions or into industry R&D.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree in Medicine (MBBS / MD), Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Molecular Life Sciences, Biotechnology, or a closely-related discipline — Sri Lankan First or Second Upper (GPA 3.3+).
- check_circle Strong laboratory / research experience evidenced through bachelor's thesis or relevant work — required for research-intensive specialisations.

- check_circle Detailed letter of motivation (~800-1,000 words) outlining biomedical research interests.

- check_circle CV evidencing laboratory experience, publications, or clinical research.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each section).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced grade C.
- check_circle Waived if your medical or bachelor's degree was taught and assessed entirely in English — Sri Lankan MBBS / BSc Biomedical / BSc Biology graduates qualify with an MOI letter from the awarding university.

Career Outcomes & PR
The Netherlands offers the Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) — a 1-year residence permit to job-search after a Dutch Master's. Graduates of Dutch universities qualify for the lower Highly Skilled Migrant salary threshold (~€2,801/month gross in 2025). Radboud MSc Medical Biology graduates routinely progress into PhD positions at Radboudumc, Amsterdam UMC, Erasmus MC, Leiden UMC, or into biomedical industry R&D at NXP Healthcare, Philips Healthcare Eindhoven, Janssen Pharmaceuticals (Leiden), MSD Boxmeer, Galapagos, plus the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) Amsterdam. Sri Lankan returnees route into clinical-research positions at the National Cancer Institute (Maharagama), PGIM, faculty positions at UoC / UoP / USJP / Kelaniya medical faculties and SLIIT Faculty of Health Sciences.
