MSc Epidemiology (NIHES)
Erasmus MC, Erasmus University Rotterdam
Course Overview
Erasmus MC is the largest and one of the most research-intensive university medical centres in the Netherlands, and its Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences (NIHES) runs a globally ranked, fully English-taught MSc in Epidemiology. The programme is built around the famous Rotterdam Study — one of the world's largest population cohorts — giving students hands-on exposure to real longitudinal datasets in cardiovascular, genetic, pharmaco-, and clinical epidemiology. Teaching is modular and quantitative from day one: study design, biostatistics, causal inference, and advanced data analysis using R and STATA.
Sri Lankan applicants with an MBBS, BSc Nursing, BSc Public Health, BSc Biostatistics, or strong quantitative life-science backgrounds are an excellent fit — NIHES has a deep pipeline of South Asian clinicians upgrading into research and policy. Rotterdam is a compact, English-friendly city with strong public transport, and the Netherlands offers graduates a one-year orientation (zoekjaar) residence permit to find skilled work. The programme is widely regarded as a gold-standard route into clinical research, pharmacoepidemiology, and a PhD.

Career Outcomes & PR
The Netherlands grants graduates a one-year orientation year (zoekjaar) to find skilled work, leading to a Highly Skilled Migrant permit. Erasmus MC Epidemiology alumni move into clinical-research and epidemiology roles at Erasmus MC and other Dutch UMCs, pharmacoepidemiology at the European Medicines Agency (Amsterdam), and biostatistics/medical-affairs roles at Janssen (J&J), Roche, and Danone. CRO roles (IQVIA, Julius Clinical) are common. Sri Lankan returnees take senior posts at the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, WHO Sri Lanka, the Medical Research Institute, and as research methodologists at Colombo, Kelaniya, and Ruhuna medical faculties.
