MSc in Management and Engineering in Industrial Engineering
RWTH Aachen University
Course Overview
RWTH Aachen's MSc in Management and Engineering (called "Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen Maschinenbau" — Industrial Engineering with Mechanical Engineering specialisation, taught in a German/English hybrid track) is one of Germany's strongest industrial engineering masters. RWTH Aachen is one of the nine TU9 elite German technical universities, consistently ranked Germany's #1 engineering school and top-50 globally in mechanical engineering and management. The university sits 60km from the Dutch/Belgian border, in the manufacturing heartland of Western Europe.
Sri Lankan engineering graduates (from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, NSBM, or SLIIT) use this degree as a route into European industrial roles — RWTH's industry partnerships with BMW, Daimler, Siemens, Bosch, ThyssenKrupp, Ford Cologne, e.GO Mobile, and the Fraunhofer Institute mean internships are abundant. The programme runs 4 semesters across mechanical engineering, business administration, and an industry-focused thesis. German public university tuition is symbolic (€300/semester) regardless of nationality — the dominant cost is Aachen living expenses (~€11,000/year).
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognised university.
- check_circle Strong grades — typically a Sri Lankan first class or upper second class equivalent (Moratuwa GPA 3.0+/4.0).
- check_circle Solid foundations in mechanics, thermodynamics, mathematics, and engineering economics.
- check_circle CV, motivation letter, two academic references.
- check_circle uni-assist application required for non-EU applicants — start 3-4 months before deadline. // VERIFY current uni-assist VPD timelines.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle DAAD German B2 certificate required for German-track courses; English-track courses (~50% of the curriculum) require English only.
- check_circle Waived if your bachelor's degree was taught entirely in English (Sri Lankan Moratuwa / Peradeniya engineering graduates qualify with an MOI letter).

Career Outcomes & PR
RWTH Aachen industrial engineering graduates qualify for Germany's 18-month post-study job-search visa, and convert to the EU Blue Card (currently a Bachelor's-graduate threshold of €45,300/yr; bottleneck professions €41,041/yr). Engineering graduates routinely clear these thresholds at first placement. Major employers: BMW Munich, Daimler Stuttgart, Siemens, Bosch, Volkswagen Wolfsburg, ThyssenKrupp, Ford Cologne, e.GO Mobile (RWTH-spinout), Fraunhofer Institute, and the Aachen-based Hochleistungsrechenzentrum (HPC). Median starting salary €55,000-65,000. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering / operations roles at MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hayleys, John Keells Engineering, and CEB.
