MSc in Cybersecurity
Sapienza University of Rome
Course Overview
Sapienza University of Rome runs a two-year, 120-CFU laurea magistrale in Cybersecurity taught entirely in English through its Faculty of Information Engineering, Informatics and Statistics. Sapienza is Italy's largest university and the department behind this degree hosts CIS Sapienza, the research centre that has authored Italy's national cyber-security framework work — so the teaching sits close to the people advising the Italian state on the subject.
The curriculum is technical rather than managerial. Core work covers cryptography and its practical failures, network and system security, secure software design, malware analysis and reverse engineering, digital forensics, privacy and data protection under GDPR, and the security of distributed and cloud systems. Hands-on lab work, capture-the-flag style exercises and a substantial research thesis form the backbone of assessment. Students who want the policy side can take modules on cyber-risk management and the legal framework.
The financial case for Sri Lankan applicants is unusual, and worth reading twice. Sapienza lets non-EU students whose family income sits abroad pay a flat annual fee set by the income band of their home country rather than filing Italian income documentation — and Sri Lanka currently falls in the lowest band, where tuition is around €300 a year, paid in three instalments. A regional student tax of roughly €140 and a €16 stamp duty sit on top. Applicants who instead go through the Italian ISEE income-assessment route pay more, up to about €2,924. Sapienza republishes the bands each autumn, so the band is confirmed with the International Students Office before you commit rather than assumed.
Applicants coming from a Sri Lankan BSc in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or Electronic Engineering — Moratuwa, Colombo School of Computing, SLIIT, IIT, NSBM or an affiliated UK degree — are the natural fit. Sapienza checks the credit profile directly rather than the degree title: it asks for at least 44 CFU in relevant areas, of which at least 18 must be in mathematics, physics, computer science or statistics and at least 24 across engineering, economics and law subjects. There is no written entrance examination; a committee assesses the file and interviews shortlisted applicants, and the interview can be held remotely from Colombo.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics.
- check_circle At least 44 CFU of relevant credits in the prior degree: a minimum of 18 in mathematics, physics, computer science or statistics, and a minimum of 24 across engineering, economics and law subjects. Submit full module descriptions so the committee can map your transcript.
- check_circle No written entrance examination. Admission is by committee assessment of the file plus an interview, which can be held remotely for applicants in Sri Lanka.
- check_circle Non-EU applicants resident abroad have a single application window and must also complete Universitaly pre-enrolment; a pre-acceptance letter is issued through Sapienza's International Students Office.
- check_circle Certified, translated transcripts plus a Declaration of Value (DoV) or a CIMEA statement of comparability for the Sri Lankan degree, along with a CV and motivation letter.
English Proficiency
- check_circle English at CEFR B2 is the stated requirement. Sapienza publishes no numeric IELTS or TOEFL threshold for this programme.
- check_circle IELTS Academic 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 comfortably evidences B2 and is what we advise Sri Lankan applicants to hold for the visa file as well as the application.
- check_circle Cambridge English B2 First or above is accepted.
- check_circle Self-certification of previous English-medium education is accepted in place of a certificate — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium computing degrees can use this route with a Medium of Instruction letter.
- check_circle No Italian is required for the degree; free Italian language courses are offered to international students and help considerably with daily life and the residence-permit process.

Career Outcomes & PR
Italy issues a 12-month post-study job-seeker residence permit (permesso di soggiorno per attesa occupazione), which converts to a work permit once you are employed — and cyber-security is one of the few fields where Italian employers hire in English. The programme itself names Cybersecurity Architect, Chief Information Security Officer, Incident Responder, Cyber Threat Intelligence Specialist, Security Implementer, Security Auditor, Risk Manager and Penetration Tester as its target roles. Italian destinations include Leonardo, Accenture Security, the Deloitte and PwC cyber practices, Reply, Engineering Ingegneria Informatica, the security teams at Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit, and the telecom operators, plus EU institutions and research bodies. Sri Lankan returnees route into security-analyst, penetration-testing, GRC and DevSecOps roles at WSO2, IFS, Virtusa, Sysco LABS, MillenniumIT, Dialog Axiata, LOLC Technologies and the Big Four security practices in Colombo, and the degree maps cleanly onto CEH, OSCP and CISSP certification paths.
