Master of Engineering in Clean Energy
Faculty of Applied Science, University of British Columbia
Course Overview
UBC's Master of Engineering in Clean Energy (MEng-CEEN) is delivered through the Faculty of Applied Science — Canada's largest engineering faculty and consistently ranked top-30 globally for Engineering and Technology (QS). The 12-16 month coursework-based MEng covers solar PV, wind, hydrogen and fuel cells, battery storage, smart grids, energy efficiency, biofuels, and policy-economics of energy transition. Students complete 30 credits of coursework plus a capstone industry project — UBC partners directly with BC Hydro, Powertech Labs, Enbridge, the National Research Council of Canada's Energy Mining and Environment portfolio, and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS). Coursework is taught at the UBC Point Grey campus, with field labs at the BC Hydro Powertech facility in Surrey.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach UBC MEng-CEEN after a strong Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, or KDU Faculty of Engineering, often with 1-3 years of industry experience at Ceylon Electricity Board, LECO, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, or local solar developers (LTL Holdings, WindForce, Wirecomms). The 3-year PGWP and Canada's clean-energy hiring boom (Vancouver is the Pacific Coast hub for hydrogen and clean tech) make this an extremely high-conversion route to PR. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering positions at the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, LECO, LTL Holdings, WindForce, the ADB Colombo Office's climate portfolio, and into renewable energy IPP developers across the country.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related — minimum GPA 3.2 / Upper Second-Class.
- check_circle Strong quantitative background: linear algebra, differential equations, thermodynamics, electromagnetics at Bachelor's level.
- check_circle Two academic / professional references; CV; statement of intent (500-1,000 words).
- check_circle Industry experience in the energy sector (Ceylon Electricity Board, LECO, IPP developers, solar / wind developers) is highly valued.
- check_circle GRE General is currently NOT REQUIRED at UBC MEng-CEEN.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each section).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall (min 22 in Reading and Listening; 21 in Writing and Speaking).
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution for at least 3 years — most Sri Lankan engineering applicants qualify.

Career Outcomes & PR
3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) plus Express Entry PR path — clean-energy engineering is a high-demand category on Canada's NOC-A occupations list. UBC MEng-CEEN grads route into senior engineering roles at BC Hydro, Hydro-Québec, Powertech Labs, Enbridge, ATCO, FortisBC, Powerex, Siemens Energy Canada, Hitachi Energy Canada, Stantec, AECOM, Hatch (Vancouver), and into renewable IPP developers (Boralex, Innergex) — CAD 90,000-130,000 starting (LKR 21M-31M/yr). Engineers Canada Professional Engineer (P.Eng) registration takes 3-4 years post-graduation. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior positions at the Ceylon Electricity Board (Transmission and Distribution Divisions), the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, LECO, LTL Holdings, WindForce, Lanka Solar, the ADB Colombo Office, and Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) registration via EngSL.
