Master of Engineering (MEng) in Civil Engineering
University of British Columbia
Course Overview
UBC's MEng in Civil Engineering is a 12-month coursework-based professional degree (no thesis) designed for engineers heading straight into industry practice. Specialisation streams include Structural & Earthquake Engineering, Geotechnical, Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Transportation, and Project & Construction Management — Vancouver's seismic context makes the structural and earthquake-engineering electives particularly strong.
The program is recognised by Engineers and Geoscientists BC as a pathway toward the P.Eng. licence, the Canadian credential required to sign off on engineering work. Sri Lankan MEng grads from UBC routinely move into infrastructure consultancies (Stantec, WSP, AECOM, Hatch, Klohn Crippen Berger) and into BC Hydro, TransLink, and Metro Vancouver municipal roles.

Career Outcomes & PR
MEng Civil graduates qualify for a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — civil engineering is on every provincial in-demand list, and BC's $40B+ infrastructure pipeline (Broadway Subway, Massey Tunnel replacement, Site C, seismic retrofits) keeps demand high. Sri Lankan graduates have moved into Stantec, WSP, Arup, AECOM, Hatch, and Klohn Crippen Berger in Vancouver and Calgary. Starting salaries sit around CAD 75,000–85,000 in BC, with P.Eng.-licensed engineers earning CAD 105,000+ within 4 years.
