Course Overview

McGill's MEng in Mechanical Engineering is a coursework-based professional master's run out of the Macdonald Engineering Building on the downtown campus. Two streams are available — Project Option (8 courses + a 1-term industry-aligned project) and Thesis Option (5 courses + research thesis). Research strengths sit in robotics, biomechanics, aerospace systems, mechatronics, and CFD — areas where Sri Lankan engineering graduates from Peradeniya, Moratuwa, or SLIIT typically have strong undergraduate foundations.

The Project Option is the more popular route for Sri Lankan applicants because it's faster (16 months), funded entirely by tuition (no need to secure a research supervisor before applying), and the capstone project often turns into a Montreal-based industry hire. Bombardier, CAE, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Mecaer Aviation all recruit directly from McGill's MEng cohort.

Career Outcomes & PR

MEng graduates qualify for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — duration matches program length, so up to 2 years of open work authorisation in Canada. Mechanical engineering is in demand across Quebec and Ontario manufacturing corridors; Bombardier, CAE, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Hydro-Québec, and Tesla (Montreal R&D) all recruit Sri Lankan MEng grads. Starting salaries sit around CAD 75,000 in Montreal, rising to CAD 90,000+ in Toronto and Vancouver.
