MA in Mediterranean Archaeology
Sapienza University of Rome
Course Overview
Mediterranean Archaeology is a two-year, 120-CFU laurea magistrale in class LM-2, taught entirely in English and delivered in person by Sapienza's Department of Ancient World Studies. Sapienza's own presentation describes the programme as primarily designed for international students seeking instruction in English — which is unusual for an Italian humanities degree, and it means the cohort is built around international students rather than accommodating them.
The subject matter runs across the archaeology of the Mediterranean basin from prehistory through the classical and late-antique periods: Aegean and Greek archaeology, Roman archaeology and topography, Near Eastern and Egyptian material culture, Phoenician and Punic archaeology, archaeological method and stratigraphy, materials analysis, landscape and settlement archaeology, and the conservation and museology of excavated material. Sapienza runs excavation projects across Italy and the Mediterranean and its students take part in them; fieldwork is the point of the degree, not an add-on.
There is a specific admissions advantage here for a Sri Lankan applicant. For candidates holding an Italian three- or four-year degree, Sapienza applies rigid CFU thresholds in archaeology-specific subject areas. For candidates with a foreign degree it does not: admission is decided on an overall assessment of prior knowledge in history and art and in classical studies and archaeology, with a possible remote interview. A history, archaeology, art history, geography or classics graduate from a Sri Lankan university is therefore assessed on the substance of the file rather than screened out on a credit count.
Cost is the other reason to look seriously. Sapienza lets non-EU students whose family income is abroad pay a flat annual fee set by their country's income band instead of filing Italian income documentation, and Sri Lanka currently sits in the lowest band at around €300 a year. A regional student tax of about €140 and a €16 stamp duty are listed separately, and Sapienza does not state clearly whether they sit inside or on top of that figure, so confirm with the student registry. The ISEE-assessed route would run to roughly €2,821. Either way, the real budget is Rome living costs and the annual proof of funds the study visa requires.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor of Arts or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad — for Sri Lankan applicants, a BA (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised) in Archaeology, History, Art History, Classics, Geography, Anthropology or a related humanities discipline.
- check_circle Applicants with a foreign degree are not held to a fixed CFU threshold. Sapienza instead makes an overall assessment demonstrating the soundness of prior knowledge in history and art, and in classical studies and archaeology, with a possible remote interview — the rigid 30 and 60 CFU thresholds apply only to holders of Italian degrees.
- check_circle A personal-knowledge assessment covering degree mark, qualifications and academic record forms part of the decision, so field-school participation, excavation experience or a dissertation on a material-culture topic materially strengthens the file.
- check_circle Non-EU applicants requiring a student visa have a single application date of 15 September and must obtain a pre-acceptance letter through Sapienza's International Students' Office before Universitaly pre-enrolment.
- check_circle Certified, translated transcripts plus a Declaration of Value (DoV) or a CIMEA statement of comparability for the Sri Lankan degree.
English Proficiency
- check_circle English at CEFR B2 is the stated requirement — a fluent command of English, assessed according to the procedures set out in the programme's academic regulations.
- check_circle Sapienza publishes no numeric IELTS or TOEFL threshold for this programme. IELTS Academic 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 comfortably evidences B2 and is what we advise Sri Lankan applicants to hold, not least for the visa file.
- check_circle Cambridge English B2 First or above is accepted.
- check_circle The waiver mechanism is deferred to the academic regulations rather than published inline — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degrees should ask the department, in writing, whether a Medium of Instruction letter suffices before deciding to skip a test.
- check_circle No Italian is required for the degree. Free Italian courses are offered to international students, and even basic Italian materially improves fieldwork and archive access.

Career Outcomes & PR
Italy issues a 12-month post-study job-seeker residence permit (permesso per attesa occupazione) that converts to a work permit on employment. Sapienza names two graduate profiles for this degree: archaeologists — working in archaeological heritage management, directing excavations, running documentation projects, in museums and archaeological parks, on national and international research projects, and in heritage communication and specialised publishing — and museum curators and conservators, working on the conservation, enhancement and communication of archaeological heritage and in the management of museums and archaeological parks. Italy's heritage sector is the largest employer of archaeologists in Europe, and the degree also feeds directly into PhD study. Sri Lankan returnees route into the Department of Archaeology, the Central Cultural Fund and its World Heritage projects at Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Galle, the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology at the University of Kelaniya, the national museum system, UNESCO and heritage-conservation NGOs, and university teaching in archaeology and history.
